Five immense footprints cut into the rain-soaked ground, each sharply defined and unlike the track of any familiar animal. In a forest of colossal tree-like structures on an unnamed Earth-type planet, Charles Tinnerman and two companions have left their survey ship on an unauthorised expedition. Their search for knowledge soon becomes an encounter with alien scale, where scientific curiosity offers no protection from the consequences of intrusion. The creature they find is not merely gigantic but biologically extraordinary: five sensory feet support a rotating gait, turning movement itself into a problem to be observed and understood. When a smaller member of the species is killed by one of the explorers, the adult's pursuit forces Tinnerman to depend on analysis, terrain and timing rather than superior force. The survival adventure gains its tension from the limits of human power in an ecosystem whose forms and behaviours resist easy assumptions. Beyond the immediate danger, this science-fiction short story asks what responsibility explorers bear towards nonhuman life and how individual judgement should answer institutional duty. Its speculative biology is inseparable from its ethical conflict: every footprint is evidence, every observation may become a means of survival, and every human action carries weight in a world not made for humanity. Alien-planet exploration here becomes a confrontation with vulnerability, knowledge and the cost of entering an unfamiliar living system. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions. It has been restored for today's and future generations. This edition is not just a reprint - it's a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
