A voice calls across absence, asking gods, lovers and song itself to answer the pressures of desire. From a hymn to Aphrodite to fifty-two surviving fragments, this collection gathers Greek lyric poetry shaped by longing, jealousy, beauty and separation. Some poems flash into view for only a few lines; others become invocations, prayers or dramatic appeals, preserving moments in which memory and feeling resist silence. Orchards, groves, altars and the sea form the shifting ground of these sapphic poems. Brides, mourners and singers appear beside mythic figures, while dances, offerings, wedding observances and funeral rites place private emotion within communal acts. Youth and age, presence and loss, song and death repeatedly meet, yet the fragmentary form leaves space around each image and utterance. A spring, a tomb or an absent companion can become the focus of an entire lyric world. Against these brief, concentrated pieces stands the substantially longer "Sappho to Phaon", a rendering of Ovid's Heroic Epistle XV. Its sustained address extends the collection's central concerns into a fuller dramatic form, allowing desire, separation, memory and poetic expression to unfold across a single appeal. The contrast between broken lyric remnants and an extended voice gives the volume its distinctive movement: from invocation to recollection, from ceremonial song to intimate speech, and from fleeting beauty to the awareness of mortality. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions. It has been restored for today's and future generations. This edition is not just a reprint - it's a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
