Little is known about Sun Tzu (544-496 B.C.) and his life during the Warring States period after the decline of the Zhou dysnasty, but his classic, The Art of War, has been one of the central works of Chinese literature for 2500 years.
John Minford studied Chinese at Oxford and at the Australian National University and has taught in China, Hong Kong, and New Zealand. He edited (with Geremie Barme) Seeds of Fire: Chinese Voices of Conscience and (with Joseph S. M. Lau) Chinese Classical Literature: An Anthology of Translations. He has translated numerous works from the Chinese, including the last two volumes of the Penguin Classics edition of Cao Xueqin's eighteenth-century novel The Story of the Stone and the martial-arts fiction of the contemporary Hong Kong novelist Louis Cha.

I'm so happy i got my hands on this beautifully leatherbound piece of eastern history. This book looks stunning with its black leather cover and golden edge. I'm actually rather surprised by the low price of this tome. The contents of this work are very impressive as well, as they are very informative yet easy to read and process. I usually struggle more while reading nonfiction historical books in longer sittings but this one really pulled me in. The author didnt just put pieces of chinese (and generally asian) history/philosophy in a chronological order but did it in a way to give the different excerpts a cultural context. This doesnt just help us understanding the contents on their own, but makes us see the cultural relevance even to this day. Seriously a must-read for fans of Asian Culture and fans of philosophy in general.
