Individualität und Menschlichkeit
Nach "Before I Fall", "Panic" und der "Delirium"-Trilogie gelingt Lauren Oliver erneut ein Science-Fiction-Thriller, der unter die Haut geht. Obwohl die Handlung bewusst dystopisch angelegt ist und dadurch Distanz zu unserer heutigen Lebenswelt schaffen soll, hinterlässt Olivers Roman ein beunruhigendes Gefühl. Angesichts der aktuellen Möglichkeiten der Wissenschaft und der immer weiter in den Hintergrund rückenden Ethik und Moral von Pharmakonzernen und deren Methoden, stellt Olivers Szenario ein erschreckendes Beispiel für immer aggressiver betriebene Genforschung und –manipulation dar. Treffend bezeichnet sich Dr. Saperstein selbst als Gott und wirft die Frage auf, wie weit Wissenschaftler für das scheinbare Wohlergehen der Menschheit noch gehen dürfen. Wer Olivers "Delirium"-Trilogie verschlungen hat, wird auch diesen Roman lieben und ihn mehr nicht aus der Hand legen können. Besonders schön ist der Perspektivenwechsel, indem der Roman sowohl von vorne (Lyra) als auch von hinten (Gemma) gelesen werden kann – ein Wendecover, der etwas anderen Art.
