    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Really insightful and inspiring!

Really insightful and inspiring! I really liked every essay in this book. Some stories are very personal, others are about, for example, how some marriage laws in the UK are inadequate and how the (Muslim) patriarchy exploits this. The overall message I took away from this collection of stories is that Muslim women need to be strong and fight not only patriarchy within their religious community, but patriarchy in general and also racism/Islamophobia in society. So, an inspiring read for Muslim and non-Muslim readers alike.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

Be too loud. Swear too much. Go too far.

This is a collection of essays giving voice to a group of people who are often talked about, but rarely get the chance to speak for themselves within the national discourse. 17 Muslim women write about how they are navigating present-day life, the intersection of multiple oppressions as they're dancing between their feminist fight within patriarchal communities and the islamophobic society at large, love and divorce, sexuality, mental health, representation, faith and the politicisation of a piece of clothing intended to reprensent an act of submission to their God (and not men). Each essay has its own personal topic and tone of voice, ranging from funny experiences, to poetic explorations or more fact-bound social/political criticism. All essays are united in the fact that the main problem Muslim women have to deal with does not derive from their religion itself but from the way patriarchal cultures are using religion to control and oppress them.
