Xenophon's Anabasis of Cyrus, Books 3-4 is a historical work that recounts the journey of a group of Greek mercenaries who were hired by Cyrus the Younger to overthrow his brother, Artaxerxes II, and claim the Persian throne. The book covers the events that take place after the death of Cyrus and the subsequent struggle for survival and escape by the Greek soldiers. The text is divided into two books, with Book 3 detailing the aftermath of the Battle of Cunaxa and the beginning of the Greek soldiers' retreat through hostile territory. It describes the challenges they face, including harsh weather, lack of supplies, and attacks from local tribes. The book also explores the leadership qualities of Xenophon, one of the Greek generals, as he takes charge and guides the soldiers through their perilous journey.Book 4 continues the story of the Greek soldiers as they navigate through unfamiliar terrain and encounter various obstacles along the way. This includes crossing rivers, scaling mountains, and engaging in battles with hostile forces. The book also delves into the relationships between the Greek soldiers and their allies, as well as their interactions with the local population.Overall, Xenophon's Anabasis of Cyrus, Books 3-4 is a fascinating account of a historical event that has been studied and analyzed for centuries. It provides insight into the military tactics and strategies of the ancient Greeks, as well as their resilience and determination in the face of adversity. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
