Rezension

It's a rare book indeed that manages to instill so much compassion and nuance into its exploration of weighty topics like grief and trauma while also creating an incredibly dreamy romance for the ages. AutoStraddle 20230123

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

Can‘t go wrong with Tess Sharpe

Reading „Six Times We Almost Kissed (And One Time We Did)“, I legit cried three times before even reaching page 100. I stopped counting after cry #6. I suggest you bring tissues. There’s a lot of history between Penny and Tate - including the six times they almost kissed. It’s nothing they really talk about, they’re not even friends, but they can’t seem to escape each other what with their mothers being best friends. When Penny’s mother becomes a living liver donor for Tate’s and both households move into one, the girls decide on a truce. That doesn’t stop the almost-kissing, though, and it may be time for them to confront a few things. What sounds like a fun little story (and it is at times!), is actually really sad. Which I knew, but just in case this would be your first Sharpe book. Because while there is the romance, Six Times We Almost Kissed shines with two protagonists who had to deal with very different traumata in their young lives and try to find ways to make it work. Tate‘s mum has been sick repeatedly and this constant worry about her health and the cost of health care is taking its toll. Some girls don’t get some things, is a devastating line that keeps coming up in Tate‘s chapters. Penny on the other hand has experienced a terrible loss not long ago with the death of her father. On top of the impact that had on her, her relationship with her grieving mother has suffered greatly, leaving a child in desperate need of support (and us with one of the most infuriating characters that I nonetheless also felt for). At this point, I’m convinced you can’t go wrong with Tess Sharpe. I genuinely couldn’t put the book down except maybe to dry my tears. And that‘s been my experience with several of her books. Her non-chronological storylines drag you in and won’t let you go until you’ve gotten to the bottom of what’s happening, with both past and present having an equal pull. There’s so much character and life put into those few pages - and it shows. So, another book I very much recommend. I hope you have a good cry! CN: You can find an extensive list of content notes on Tess Sharpe‘s social media.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

Slow pacing, repetitive narration, and underwhelming chemistry

Penny and Tate, childhood friends-turned-reluctant housemates, share a complicated history of almost-romantic moments. When Penny’s mother falls ill, she moves in with Tate’s family, forcing the two girls to confront their unresolved tension. It’s a setup ripe for emotional drama and romantic payoff. The problem lies in the execution. The pacing is painfully slow, bogged down by long stretches of internal monologue and quiet moments that drag instead of building tension. While I am a sucker for “slow-burn” romances, here it often feels more like the story is stalling and boring. A slow-burn thats too slow-burn.
