Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

A game of hide and seek in an abandoned amusement park, the winner gets 50.000 $. Sounds like fun, doesn't it? It is until you realise that your life might be on the line here. "Hide" is the perfect book for fans of survival horror. A suspenseful read until the last page.

You can't run, but you can hide...

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

After reading mostly (YA) Fantasy all my life and then recently starting to crave horror stories more and more, I was excited to pick up this book. Something about the concept of turning seemingly innocent children's games into a much more terrifying version of themselves tickles my brain. So when I stumbled across this tale of an elaborate hide-and-seek massacre (which is a plot idea I myself had before!) I just had to read it! It started really well, considering the gruesome depiction of our main character's past. But throughout the book I felt like the principle of show-don't-tell got a little lost here. The events leading up to the competition and especially after the readers get a pretty good idea of what is actually going on, seem rather unnecessarily stretched out. I would have hoped to read more of the thrill, the terror that come with being hidden and almost found, which was the reason I picked up "Hide" in the first place. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the variety of characters and to get to know their very different personalities, motivations and even some of their background stories. I didn't expect to feel so strongly about many of them, may it be in a good or bad way. Also, didn't expect to get a queer romance sprinkled in there! Usually, in horror stories, I don't feel the need for the characters to be fleshed out and relatable in such a way, so this was a very pleasant surprise! As were the multiple hints towards a certain Greek myth which I picked up on at some point halfway-through, wondering if it was intended or not, and then having it confirmed in the acknowledgements at last! Very nice! All in all, great characters, interesting writing style with multiple, ever changing POVs and an angry, important message about generational guilt and entitlement. Would definitely recommend for fans of queer horror in a chilling setting and character-driven stories! :)
