The Stars at Noon

This book has the architecture of a political thriller. It is mystical and poetic. The narrator finds humor in the pace and spirit of life in the third world. The plot takes place in 1984 Nicaragua. This fact and also the analysis of a totalitarian regime hints at Orwell's "1984". The female first-person narrator lacks everything. Not only money to leave but also morals and concern for the cause of Nicaragua. She is utterly clueless about the country she resides in. The subtext of book is the history of the United States interfere in other countries. Not to mention this book was written a few years before the 'Iran-Contra-Affair'. Johnson has once again crafted a remarkable political fable.
