Brainwyrms skillfully pairs disgusting body horror with political commentary about the ways in which far-right ideologies corrupt the mind, all the while exploring interpersonal relationships and dynamics within the queer community. What stood out for me in particular was how Rumfitt tackles the issue of transphobia in the UK, dismantling harmful TERF narratives as she goes and thus creating a story that has you glued to the page all the way to the end.

A TERF bombing her workplace throws Frankie's life out of joint. She starts drinking and sleeping around, Frankie meets Vanya. But Vanya is as full of mysteries as they are attractive. Vanya's obsession with parasites leads Frankie down a rabbit hole. Simultaneously a satire of Britain's rabid anti-trans lobby and a psychedelic body horror experience, Brainwyrms is a must read piece of queer horror.
