Meine letzte Rezension Taiwan Travelogue von Yáng Shuang-zi
Taiwan Travelogue is a historical novel about Japanese writer Aoyama Chizuko visiting Taiwan during its occupation by imperial Japan. She is assigned a local guide to show her the country's culture and delicacies. But while Aoyama devours local specialties like she knows no tomorrow, she notices a strange distance between her and her companion. A novel that leaves just enough unsaid while the reader slowly notices masterfully woven themes of colonial violence, the reification of local culture into tourist fare, and just the absolute worst kind of stolen-glimpses-around-corners lesbian romance. If you like food, if you love history, if you're still looking for that special kind of pride read, this is your book.

    Twilight

If you have not heard it yet, Twilight will be turning 20 this fall. I don't know if there is a series that impacted literature more throughout my life. Born out of 90s vampire media like Buffy, Interview with the Vampire, the original Vampire diaries novel run, etc, Twilight was the first series since Harry Potter that pushed masses into the book stores. From this hype came the obvious riders on its coat tails, but the influence of Twilight is more far-reaching than that. Any series this popular is bound to have fanfiction but as far as I'm aware Twilight is the first franchise whose fan fiction also became a bestseller. Snowqueens Icedragon aka E L James was picked up from her BDSM fanfic's success to make it into a book series with the names changed and so 50 Shades of Gray was born. One might say this opened the floodgates to various kinds of fanfiction and other web fiction to be published into the physical markets and for publishers to keep their eyes always on Wattpad and nowadays AO3. Much of modern young adult, new adult, dark romance, and romantasy is still, knowingly or not, breathing the fumes of Twilight. Since it has been twenty years, Twilight is now historically valuable, however strange this may sound.

With the dedication of this book to Richard Powers' mother for handing him a book about the ocean, one of themes is already set: where do our childhoods lead us? For Todd, his father's obsession with games and competition leads him to develop a social media platform with gamified elements. For his estranged former friend/rival Rafi, his father's drive to beat the white man at his own game leads Rafi to self-destructive perfectionism as a scholar. For Ina, growing up as the child of a military officer causes her to try and reconnect with her Polynesian home and to cope with its pollution. Meanwhile, Eveline being the daughter of the inventor of the aqualung makes her dedicate her life to marine biology. Now all their lives are about to change forever as an oceansteading project approaches the small Pacific island of Makatea. Powers weaves the lives, internal conflicts, and passions of his protagonists into a web while the novel asks important questions not only about nature and technology but about what we sacrifice for our talents and obsessions.

Peckham is one of London's roughest parts, towering council estates, going on for miles, a hotbed of knife crime and drug dealing. Caleb Femi tells the stories of the youths who grew up in Peckham with incredible range of form, interlacing multiple forms of texts and language into a collection that is intelligent and grounded.

"I gripped my Saint Jude scapular and put my life in the devil's hands cause like Tren Lokote says, God doesn't come through on this kind of thing." Most of the women in this novel face seemingly inescapable troubles: poverty, underage pregnancy, violence committed against them and their friends. But they are not about to give up without trying to spit into the face of adversity and quoting corrido songs at it. From the daughter of a narco boss, to a trans prostitute, these are accounts written with bravado and sometimes bitter irony. I think at this point the warning should be in order that this book isn't just a fun romp but contains depictions of violence and rape that are not for everyone. But it is deeply necessary and admirable that a book this personal, funny, and genuinely sad has been written about life as a woman in a country where femicide is common. There is a deep knowledge and respect to featuring women not as hapless victims but as determined bitches.

    Flowers For Algernon

Charlie is mentally disabled and on the rough intelligence level of a 6-year-old, but gets a rare offer. Scientists have figured out how to exponentially increase the intelligence of a mouse called Algernon and he seems to be doing well. Charlie takes up the offer and soon his mind begins expanding past his wildest dreams, but a sudden degradation in Algernon's intelligence confronts Charlie with the possible limits of his newfound powers. Told entirely through Charlie's perspective, Flowers for Algernon shows his progress through his writing style. A very down-to-earth and sombre sci-fi novel.

    The Man Who Lived Underground

Fred Daniels is trying to head home to his pregnant wife one day when he is arrested. The police try to pin the murder of his employer's neighbor on him. He narrowly escaped down a manhole, and, for lack of better ideas, decides to make the sewers his home. From its disappointingly familiar depiction of police violence and injustice to the strangely joyful experience of living underground, this is one of the most compelling novels of the 20th century.

    The Remains of the Day

Stevens has been working at Darlington hall as a butler for decades when his previous employer dies. His new employer grants him his first vacation which he decides to take across Britain's West Country. As he sets out, Stevens starts to reflect on what being a good butler means to him and his past work in regards to that. It is slowly revealed that Stevens has sacrificed any moral values and personal attachments in pursuit of servitude. Kazuo Ishiguro delivers a master class in an unreliable narrator. Stevens serves as a moratorium on the British past and its servile domestic underclass with their delusions of participation in their master's glory.

    Lavinia

Ursula K. Le Guin, usually known for fantasy or science fiction, attempts yet another feat: to retell the Aeneid (Vergil's founding myth fo rome) from the perspective of Aeneas' wife, Lavinia. Lavinia is the daughter of the king of Latium and when confronted with a poet's oracle has to make a choice: marry Aeneas and provoke war or marry her suitor Turnus and go against prophecy. With her typical eye for not only characters, but also societies Le Guin completes a portrait of what the life and thoughts of a pre-roman princess would look like. This includes the belief in oracles, women as potential pawns in the formation of alliances, and the dominant position of violence. A moving retelling of a male-centered myth.

In five parts, Bolano delves into a mysterious German author, those who study him, and his connection to a Mexican border town which is plagued by a series of murders of young women. The five parts of this novel are essentially five novels by themselves, from an academic novel to character pieces to a gut-wrenching realist novel. A stunning achievement for the late Roberto Bolano.
