An almost erotic-free story of two women who met and influenced each other: linguistically, emotionally and structurally just wonderful! I remain a fan of this author, I must admit. You get some of Highsmith's personal and metaphorical exposition. This book forms an EXCEPTION of this writer, as she had not written a love story of this nature before & after this work. Which I think is a shame, since it was published at a time when most same-sex couples and love affairs had tragic endings. The notes at the end were touching.

Eine sehr fesselnde Geschichte, ich konnte kaum aufhören zu lesen und das Buch war demnach leider auch viel zu früh fertig gelesen. Sehr empfehlenswert! Das Buch lässt sich auch angenehm in der Hand halten und hat eine gute Dicke.

Imagine this: It's the 50s. You live in a conservative, heteronormative America. You're 19 years old and want to become a theatre set designer, but job offers are sparse, so you work in the toy section of a big department store. It's christmas time, and Richard, the man who wants to marry you real bad, practically clings to your heel. But you don't share his feelings, so you act aloof. There's also a woman, you've been staring at her for quite some time, she's mindlessly browsing the toy section. You don't know what she's looking for or why she captures your gaze, you believe it may be her poise or her grace, and so you keep on staring. At least until she approaches your register, and suddenly you feel quite silly with your little Santa hat, but she smiles at you nonetheless. In fact, she keeps smiling for the entirety of the conversation, and you're captivated all over again. That's how the tumultuous love story between Therese and Carol starts, don't worry, there's a whole lot more where that came from. If you want to be captured by a story in the same way Therese is captured by Carol, then ''The Price Of Salt'' is the book for you.
