Meine letzte Rezension The Little Match Girl von Hans Christian Andersen
With Christmas right around the corner, "The Little Match Girl" is one of those stories that perfectly embody the convoluted spirit of the wintry season. At its core, it is a tapestry of dark and tragic themes that end up creating a hauntingly beautiful fairy tale that will leave you feeling absolutely hollow inside. The one thing you will most likely take to heart after reading this short yet impactful story is that you should never take anything you have for granted and to always show compassion and empathy. "The Little Match Girl" is an efficacious tale about the plight of the poor and society’s often single-minded, cruel, and greed-driven corpus. It will leave you staring blankly at the wall with a heavy feeling in your heart, debating and cursing the iniquity of this world. Then again, the best stories are those that touch us, and with very little words Andersen still managed to deliver on that front. In conclusion: A short and important read that is absolutely worth your time.

The Farseer Trilogy 1. Assassin's Apprentice

In my humble opinion, ''Assassin's Apprentice'', the first entry in the Farseer Trilogy, is the perfect fantasy book, and I mean that in every sense of the word. Coincidentally, it is also written by one of my all-time favorite authors, Robin Hobb. Don't worry though, I'll try not to be too biased. The premise goes as follows: Fitz, the bastard son of Prince Chivalry Farseer, the current heir to the throne, has been an outcast his entire life. At the age of 6, he starts his training as an assassin. And while he may not be deemed good enough in the eyes of the royal family, Fitz absolutely excels at his work in the shadows. As time goes on and he becomes more and more prolific as an assassin, he slowly gets entangled in the political web of the kingdom and its residing court. And when Fitz uncovers a plot to overthrow the Farseer throne, he must make a choice. Either he uses his well-honed skills to serve the royal family - the very people who have abhorred and overlooked him simply for the fact that he was born out of wedlock - or he finally pursues the revenge he has been seeking his entire life. ''Assassin's Apprentice'' is an absolutely enthralling and heart-wrenching tale about identity, duty, honor, and sacrifice. It is immersive, evocative, and visceral. The characters Robin Hobb brings to life within these pages feel painfully real. They are flawed, nuanced, and imperfectly perfect. I urge you to give this utterly gripping book the chance it deserves.

    The Way of Kings

Frankly, I thought no other Sanderson book could ever surpass the beauty, intrigue and uniqueness of "Mistborn". Well, jokes on me I guess, because "The Way of Kings" well and truly knocked me off my reading chair multiple times. This spectacular first entry to the "Stormlight Archive" absolutely blows most other current high fantasy series out of the water in terms of scope, world and character-building, and I can confidently say that not a single one of the over 1000 pages of this epic saga left me feeling jaded or indifferent to the story that was told. Ergo I truly salute Brandon Sanderson for his craft. It is certainly no easy task to keep a reader engaged for such a long period of time, and to absolutely grip one’s attention from beginning to end is a tremendous feat in itself. I will, however, say that "The Way of Kings" is still very much traditional fantasy in the same vein of Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" and Robert Jordan's "The Wheel of Time". If you expect continuous bloodshed and violent battles every other page or so, you will most likely be disappointed. "The Way of Kings" primarily excels in its story-telling and characters, it hits every emotional note right on the head, and that is precisely what makes it so great. I learned to care for these characters, I grew invested in their fates, and that is the magic that Sanderson manages to wield so expertly. I am already itching to pick up "Words of Radiance" and if it is even half as good as its predecessor I fear I will have to write another overly long recommendation raving, yet again, about Brandon Sanderson‘s work.

    The Last Unicorn

In this 1968 postmodern classic we follow the titular last unicorn, joined by the bumbling magician Schmendrick, and free-spirited Molly Grue, on her quest to find the remainder of her seemingly lost kind. However, what at first glance may only be a whimsical fantasy tale intended for children actually dives a lot deeper. The last unicorn explores the meaning of immortality, the loss of innocence, the dangers of unchecked power, and above all, the importance of having hope and believing in love, in spite of all the misery in this world. Seldom do you find such a poignant and imaginative analysis of the human condition. An absolute must-read for every fantasy fan.

The Hobbit or There And Back Again

"The Hobbit" could have been Tolkien's magnum opus, but "The Silmarillion" has claimed that title for itself. However, that does not diminish the greatness of his first published novel. I initially read "The Hobbit" when I was 9. Since then, it has been transformed into a permanent fixture in my life, and I reread it at least yearly, despite the fact that it was originally intended for children. But then again, that is precisely what makes it so great. W.H. Auden was right when he said that "there are good books which are only for adults because their comprehension presupposes adult experiences, but there are no good books which are only for children." and "The Hobbit" just so happens to be the perfect example. With its iconic cast of characters, beautifully written prose, adventurous plot, mesmerizing world-building, and captivating portrayal of its primary villain, the sentient dragon Smaug, this book is still as enjoyable to me as it was when I was 9 years old, if not even more.

    Mistborn 1

I hesitated for a long time with Mistborn. When I first bought it, I was still somewhat apprehensive of the sheer vastness of the Cosmere, which at the time, seemed like a literary mountain without a summit to me. My initial hesitance is something I regret deeply, because Mistborn is by far one of the best books I’ve ever read. The world Sanderson weaves here is refreshingly original and has everything you could ever wish for. Complex characters, a strong female protagonist, a unique magic system that absolutely trumps your usual run-of-the-mill magic, intricate world-building, and gripping plot twists, with the signature Sanderlanche adding the cherry on top. In conclusion, don’t make the same mistake I did. Pick up Mistborn and embrace your journey through the Cosmere, I guarantee you it’ll be fun.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Every book that encourages its readers to think beyond the constraints of the world is worth reading. Even more so when it incorporates important themes that speak to people of all ages and backgrounds in a meaningful way. In the real world, the Pevensies may grow up and, in time, forget the wondrous realm of Narnia and its inhabitants. The reader, however, will always have a way to go back and roam the halls of Cair Paravel or explore Beaver's Dam. Such is the power of the written word. A power C.S. Lewis also recognized, and so he decided to write a story about the disparity between good and evil, betrayal and loyalty, as well as magic and reality. A story that transposes you from one plane of existence to another and makes you wish that you too had an ancient closet that lets you enjoy life alongside Aslan, Mr. Beaver, and Reepicheep.

    Coraline

If you think the movie is scary, then oh boy do I have news for you. Neil Gaiman's mind should honestly be studied. Personally, I would like to know how the concept of ''Coraline'' came to fruition, because there's no way you just randomly create a parallel universe of such caliber in your head one day. Anyway, besides having a ton of fun with this, I can also promise you that you will most certainly develop an aversion to buttons of any kind. Do not despair though, ''Coraline'' also has its heartwarming moments, which often carry profound messages and encourage you to look for a deeper meaning. Oh, and there are also circus mice, a talking cat, and weird opera singers, which offer some reprieve from all the scary stuff. Enjoy!

    The Eye of the World

Let me preface this by saying that ''The Wheel of Time'' series spans 14 books. And they aren't small books by any means. We're talking about huge books that have their ups and downs just like any protracted series. Starting ''The Wheel of Time'' certainly poses a commitment. The question is whether it's worth it or not. If you like fast-paced fantasy books with a ton of romance and action elements, then probably not. However, if you are a fan of magnificent character work, rich world-building and lore, as well as a whole lot of political intrigue, then my answer would be a very determined yes. And even if you initially find yourself in the former category, give ''The Wheel of Time'' a chance nonetheless. You may fall in love with it after all.
