Rezension

"Via lyrical language that winningly captures the magic and dreamlike aura of young love, Ancrum (Murder of Crows) expertly weaves together brief, propulsive chapters brimming with riveting action, powerful emotion, and deeply felt romance. In this intimate poetic reimagining of the Icarus myth, Ancrum crafts a subversive triumph that is a love letter both to healing from trauma and to the importance of connection and empathy." - Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"In her extraordinary fifth novel, Icarus, K. Ancrum performs a confident high-wire act, balancing the weighty manifestations of connection, desire and contradiction." (starred review) - BookPage

"Gradually, many secrets are revealed, suspense builds, and the romantic tension between the characters ratchets up-all of it enhanced by the vivid prose in this refreshingly succinct novel." - Horn Book Magazine

"Both romance and thriller fans will likely be gripped by this memorable love story, tinged with mythology, built around a mystery made up of bitter secrets between the two families" - Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books (starred review)

In Ancrum's character-driven Icarus, flying too close to the warmth of the sun, to the unique light offered by each person, is not a matter of gross overreach but is, in fact, a necessity, a basic condition of humanity and interconnectedness, even at the risk of violent crash and burn. - BookBrowser Review

"Ancrum weaves themes of socio-economic class, love, gender, and revenge, making this a compelling read. A poignant exploration of family, identity, and self-discovery." - School Library Journal

"With stunning prose and a deft hand, Ancrum doesn't simply rise to the challenge of navigating a compelling tale of love, trauma and vengeance, she soars. An instant classic for those who desire complex stories, beautiful writing, and engaging storytelling." - Kosoko Jackson, Lambda Award Winning Author of I'm So Not Over You

"Icarus is a masterpiece. A passionate, heartrending story on the value of emotional intimacy and human connection. K. Ancrum's concise flash-fiction style allows readers to devour the story in one sitting, or savor each word like individual brush strokes on a work of art." - Erik J. Brown, author of All That's Left in the World and Lose You to Find Me

"Beautiful, brilliant, and bold, K. Ancrum proves once again that not only is she one of the best storytellers of this generation, but a true poet, as well. Icarus is the perfect blend of an exciting heist, poetic prose, and an aching romance between two star-crossed lovers. Absolutely unputdownable!" - Aiden Thomas, Three-Time New York Times Bestselling Author of Cemetery Boys, The Sunbearer Trials, and Lost in the Never Woods

"The sparse prose in this unconventional, must-read of a trauma-infused borderline thriller is packed with emotional breadth." - Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"It's a myth that inspires even today. K. Ancrum remodels it entirely in a young adult fantasy that's easily one of the most acclaimed titles of the year (and it's only March)." - Parade

"Beautifully written...Psychologically acute, subtle, and sophisticated." - Booklist (starred review)

"Rhythmic. Moody. A book of aching. K. Ancrum tells a story you can't get out of your skin." - Olivia A. Cole, author of Dear Medusa

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

    Tolles Buch!

"I was yours before we even met"

Icarus steals art and Kayla Ancrum stole a piece of my heart with this book. The beautifully written retelling of the Icarus myth with a lot of nuance captured my heart and my attention from the first page. We follow Helios and Icarus and get to see how their friendship slowly blossoms into something more. What follows is heartfelt, tender and of course a little bit heartbreaking.A love that is either destiny or doom. What will it be?

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

"You think I know art, and I wouldn't understand this?"

"Icarus was his father's son." Both artists, both thieves, both quiet, both friendless - until Icarus runs into Helios, the son of Mr. Black, a man, his father and Icarus have been stealing art off for years. Helios asks him to be his friend and this breaks every single rule Icarus had ever set up for himself. He wants to escape his thief life. But can he do that as well as saving Helios from Mr. Black? Kayla Ancrum wrote a masterpiece. The modern retelling of a myth I've always loved in a way that's just amazing. With a poetic language and short chapters from Icarus' Point of View Ancrum creates an atmosphere you just cannot escape. Helios and Icarus are meant for each other and all the characters are planned out so well. I just could recite this book over and over again. Usually I'm not a person who annotates books but I couldn't help myself picking up a pen for this one. The amount of great quotes in this book is unbelievable! And why did no one else ever write a gay love story about a couple that's so obviously meant to be written about? I'm glad K. Ancrum wrote it. And I'm glad I read it.

    Spread your wings and fly

Icarus and Helios, the thief and the sun, the star-crossed lovers who will melt your heart. This book was just beautiful. Not your typical YA novel, it gets deep under your skin. It was soft and delicate, poetic and heartbreaking – an outstanding piece of art. Such a wonderful read!

    A modern, exciting and heartwarming...

A modern, exciting and heartwarming story, inspired by the greek myth! The combination between newfound friendship and a first queer love was wonderful to witness. This story shows that, in a world of darkness, every little act of kindness matters and I very much agree.

    eBook (ePUB)

Beautifull version of the Icarus myth but....

...sadly I struggled a good three months with this book. The chapter lenght that rapidly varies from one short sentence to multiple pages was something that I just couldnt warm up to at all. But I know that this is something you either like or dont. My fellow colleague for example actually loved this especially. Besides that the story and characters somehow never really managed to grow on me. Despite liking art and loving the topics and themes of the book itself, especially the interpretation and connection to the myth of Icarus and Helios itself, I couldnt get myself to read for more than a few chapters at a time before loosing interest. Only towards the, for my taste, too short endling of the book it got really captivating and I started to cheer for them both. But while the book may not have been the right one for me I am still sure that the story about Icarus and Helios complicated but loving relationship will certainly be suited for many young and old readers out there!
