Rezension

The Kamogawa Food Detectives search for the taste of memories. Like sights and sounds, tastes are also deeply connected to one's memories. The depictions of the beautiful scenery of Kyoto and its native dishes, which are like the original landscape of Japan, warmed my heart Genki Kawamura, author of If Cats Disappeared from the World

cute father daughter restaurant

Bewertung am 30.01.2025

Bewertungsnummer: 2398816

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

A heartwarming read that’s all about food and memories. This cozy story follows a detective duo, a father and daughter team, who specialize in recreating customized dishes. Their job is to track down the exact taste of a dish someone once loved, digging into the person’s past and gathering clues from the people, restaurants, or grocery stores that helped make the dish a part of their life. Whether it's a wife’s comforting udon, a first love’s hearty beef stew, or an ex-husband’s signature pork chop, every dish is wrapped in memories. Super cute. Super cute cat cameo too.

A very special diner

Any dish in this book harbours a secret that might change the eater’s life forever. I believe in the saying that a dish can bring up long-forgotten memories as soon as you smell or eat it. Every new chapter sparked my anticipation anew. What kind of dish will it be? Will Nagare be successful with the investigation with the information given by the customer? Those dishes are described in such detail as if you were sitting at the table. The Kamogawa Food Detectives is my first book by a Japanese author. I still don’t know why I wasn’t interested in those authors before. This book is a good starting point to begin, and there are many more to come. I enjoyed the first part so much that I have already begun to read the second part. I can’t wait to see what dishes and secrets are awaiting me.

This book is like a warm meal on a cold day

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

This book is like a warm meal on a cold day. Set in a small Kyoto restaurant, it tells gentle, emotional stories of people searching for forgotten flavors from their past. The book doesn’t rely on dramatic twists or fast-paced action. Instead, it gently pulls the reader in with its warm tone, reflective storytelling, and deep sense of empathy. Each chapter feels like a complete short story, where the mystery of a dish becomes a journey into someone’s heart. With its calm pace and heartfelt moments, it’s a quiet celebration of memory, comfort, and the magic of food. Ideal for anyone who loves reflective, cozy reads

Short and cute read

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

Personally, I believe that food is a huge part of culture and a great source of comfort, so to read short stories about the way dishes from character's childhoods were so memorable that they're remembered over 50 years later and how much they crave the comfort from their favorite dish from those years is something I can certainly get behind. (And the cameos of Drowsy the cat don't hurt either.) It reminded me a little of 'Before the coffee gets cold' just without the time-travel but you still get the staff of the dinner who're in every story and the connections between the guests and clients reaching across the book which ties the short stories together nicely. Definitely a cute and comfy book!
