Well written, with interesting ideas and characters—definitely thought-provoking. However, I was disappointed because the book gives the impression of being centered on octopuses, and it really isn’t. While they are integral to the story, it wasn’t at all what I expected based on the blurb. I also wouldn’t classify this as a thriller; there isn’t much action.

Eine absolute Empfehlung. Die. Charakteren machen in dem Buch Entwicklungen durch die wieder neue Themen und Fragestellungen im Kopf des Lesenden entstehen lassen. Das Verhalten eines Individuums, das Verhalten einer Gesellschaft gegenüber Anderen im Kontext zu andere Lebensformen. Ob organische Spezies, KI oder Android wie in welcher Form können wir miteinander auskommen? Fesselnd geschrieben, regt zum Denken an ohne erhobenen Zeigefinger.

The main merit of this book lies perhaps not in the story it tells, but in the author's reflections, on humanity, on freedom of choice and on the influence of people on the world around them. The novel devotes much attention to the problem of the development of artificial intelligence and the dangers it poses. Yet, ultimately, Ray Nayler vividly demonstrates to the reader that the greatest threat to humanity is neither artificial intelligence nor another sentient species, but human beings themselves. For a human, there is no one more dangerous than another human. So if you like science fiction with a lot of philosophical digressions, but not devoid of a gripping plot, and if you liked the movie "Arrival", then I highly recommend you read the novel "The Mountain in the Sea".
