Rezension

'Everyone I Know Is Dying is a strikingly honest portrayal of mental health and young womanhood. Iris embodies the complexities of navigating life in your twenties while grappling with mental illness and toxic relationships.

Emily Slapper's writing is sharp and uncompromising, delving deep into Iris's struggles with depression, disordered eating, and turbulent romances. While Iris may not always be likable, her flaws make her incredibly relatable, reflecting the messy reality of human existence.

What sets this book apart is its rawness. Slapper doesn't shy away from uncomfortable truths, making the reader feel almost intrusive at times. Yet, this unflinching honesty is what makes the narrative so powerful and unforgettable.

Everyone I Know Is Dying is a book that demands to be read. Its portrayal of mental health is hauntingly authentic, resonating with readers long after they've turned the final page. With its clever and witty prose, its complicated yet relatable protagonist, Emily Slapper's striking novel earns its place alongside The Bell Jar, Sorrow and Bliss, and Cleopatra and Frankenstein. Everyone I Know Is Dying introduces an exciting new literary voice, one that promises to leave a lasting impact.'

Joe Gibson, author of Seventeen

'The writing is brilliant and so honest. I was really invested in Iris's journey.'

Chloe Michelle Howarth, author of Sunburn

'Everyone I Know Is Dying paints an unflinching portrait of a woman navigating the complexities of modern existence. Emily's prose is drenched with such intense emotional resonance that it's impossible not to think of Iris, George and Patrick as real people. This novel delivers an absolute masterclass in traversing fragile mental terrain; the writing is sharp and witty and so delicately crafted. I read every page obsessively.'

Elvin Mensah, author of Small Joys

uncomfortably honest

lenireads am 03.05.2025

Bewertungsnummer: 2481568

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

This book is so uncomfortably honest and perfectly captures the worst things I've ever thought. Dealing with the world when your brain tells you there's nothing good in it or when you're seemingly paralyzed in bed is one of the hardest things to do and this book shows this so well! It's definitely a good read and very relatable.

Ehrlich und unangenehm zu gleich

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

EVeryone i know is dying

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

What can i say? I would say that this is a pretty unusual, unsettling book. Which doesn't make it bad. Quite the opposite. The blurb is a little strange, but it definitely draws attention to the book.Just like the book's cover. Iris seems to lead an average life: a fairly successful office job and an apartment she shares with a stranger. Iris struggles with depression, even to the point of suicidal thoughts. She begins to question her existence and everything else in her life. When she receives a promotion at work, for which she has worked hard, Iris falls into a deep depression. Mental health is a very important topic. Reading the book was interesting, but it can also be a bit upsetting. So if you're struggling with your own mental health, you might want to approach this book with caution. But overall, it's an exceptional book. And even though the main character is severely depressed, the writing style is anything but boring.

I wish I could have loved it more

Bewertet: eBook (ePUB 3)

This book authentically captures the experience of depression, feeling lost in your mid-twenties, and not knowing what to do next. It felt raw, real, and authentic; however, besides that, I didn't really enjoy the book. The main character was quite unlikeable. Even though I could relate to her feelings, I found her to be rather pathetic, and I struggled to sympathize with her. I particularly struggled with her boy drama, as it overshadowed every other part of the story. It really bored me, and since I couldn't connect with any of the characters, this book was a big disappointment.
