Most of the women in this novel face seemingly inescapable troubles: poverty, underage pregnancy, violence committed against them and their friends. But they are not about to give up without trying to spit into the face of adversity and quoting corrido songs at it. From the daughter of a narco boss, to a trans prostitute, these are accounts written with bravado and sometimes bitter irony. I think at this point the warning should be in order that this book isn't just a fun romp but contains depictions of violence and rape that are not for everyone. But it is deeply necessary and admirable that a book this personal, funny, and genuinely sad has been written about life as a woman in a country where femicide is common. There is a deep knowledge and respect to featuring women not as hapless victims but as determined bitches.
