Glow of the Everflame The second book in an irresistibly epic and angsty romantasy series

After the fantastic start with Spark of the Everflame, I was curious if the second book could live up to that feeling, and it not only did, but in many ways even surpassed it! As in the first book, the writing is smooth, clear, and enjoyable to read. Penn Cole brings the world of Emarion vividly to life again, with political intrigues, power struggles, and the complex structures between mortals and the Descended feeling deep and well thought out. The gap between the societies, the prejudices, and their consequences are portrayed authentically, making the conflicts tangible and far from superficial. In Glow of the Everflame, Diem goes through an intense phase of personal growth. At the end of the first book, she finds herself as the newly crowned Queen of Lumnos, and the second book picks up right there. Suddenly, she is in the world of the Descended, although she is mortal herself. This society is shaped by ruthless power structures and the Descended’s belief in their superiority over mortals. Intrigues, rigid hierarchies, and merciless decisions dominate life, and Diem must learn to navigate and survive in this world. At the same time, she discovers that her mother kept many secrets from her and suppressed her true identity, a revelation that deeply affects her and strongly shapes her actions and emotions. After a heavy loss, she also finds herself at a dark point, at times losing sight of both her surroundings and herself. Diem’s journey back to trust, especially in herself, is deeply emotional, believable, and inspiring. She learns that true strength does not lie in proving something to others, but in being honest with herself and recognizing her own abilities. At times, I found the pacing a bit slow, but after reading the Acknowledgments at the end and understanding what the author wanted to convey in this part, it made perfect sense. This calmness and depth are necessary to build a closer connection to Diem and the other protagonists and to make the complex world even more believable. The slow but steady rise in tension and the emotional intensity completely drew me in, I could hardly put the book down. Additionally, Penn Cole again demonstrates how skillfully she portrays relationships, emotions, and inner conflicts, in a way that works not only romantically but also strategically and politically. I found the character development, especially compared to the first book, very successful. Overall, Glow of the Everflame is an absolutely deserved 5-star sequel, both emotionally and narratively compelling, and it has only deepened my enthusiasm for this fantasy series. I already started reading the next book!
