Great Reimagening of what could have been

I liked this book a lot. The characters are three-dimensional, they have their strengths and their faults. The historical context is shown beautifully and influences every characters actions and thoughts. At the same time, while we are told about hardships the protagonists face, the author does not dwell on them in a voyeuristic way. Which makes it an overall uplifting read, even if you know it must end in tragedy.

I really wanted to like this retelling of Giulia, but I ended up disliking it. The feminist aspect is really not strongly worked out and I always felt it's rather against men than for women. Also Giulia's behaviour is sooooo stupid and doesn't make sense so that I was really enjoyed with her, instead of rooting for her. Another aspect that rubbed me the wrong way was the weirdly sexual desires thrown in this story.

A feminist take on the tale of Giulia Tofana, a real life poisoner executed in rome 1651. Her life, her work and her inevitable death. The book does an exellent job in portraying the inescapable shackles and situations placed upon women, but also their adaptiveness and strength found in familial and platonic bonds. Highly engaging to the last page!

This book is based on the story of Giulia Tofana and you should be prepared for a few very dark themes before going in. It lets you question how far you can go in the name of protecting yourself and others, how much you are willing to sacrifice for it, and at which point you are considered a monster. It’s a story of women and womanhood, of mothers, daughters and sisters, but also of revenge and betrayal. It didn't blow me away entirely, but it was really good nonetheless and certainly heartbreaking!
