Khalanis life comes to a stop, when she has to go to prison for a crime she didn´t commit. In the dystopian world from Alex Patton, humanity lives underground because the surface of earth isn´t safe to walk on anymore and the underground prison Khalani has to go, is most likely a death sentence for a girl like her. Nevertheless she keeps fighting and when she discovers a tragic truth, the life of the prisoners changes forever. Fighting for survival, she finds comfort in her guard Takeshi and together, they try to find a way towards a brighter future. I love dystopian novels and I definitely loved this one as well! I wasn´t so sure what to expect at the beginning but it´s easy to say that I loved the writing and enjoyed the plot as well. The story held a few interesting plot-twists and an amazing friend group to get the reader through the book. Curious about what happens next, I will definitely read the second book!

At the beginning, I had no idea where the author intended to go with this book. Events unfold quickly, and you are thrown directly into the middle of the story, with worldbuilding and character backgrounds only lightly hinted at (which is really sad since the worldbuilding has so much potential!). However, the further I read, the clearer everything became, and the writing style also improved significantly. Especially the second half of the book was very suspenseful. I enjoyed it and will definitely read book 2, as I expect the story to go much deeper.
