Augustinus' Confessions in Latin for beginners
Africa, A.D. 397. A bishop sits down to do something no one in the ancient world had ever done: tell the whole truth about himself, from the inside - to his God - while the world listening over his shoulder. His days as a young boy, the lost friend who was "half my soul." The mother who followed him across the sea.... and a voice in the garden singing tolle, lege - take up and read. Augustine's Confessions invented the inner life, and every memoir, novel and diary since followed in his footsteps.
This volume retells the whole journey in clear, graded Latin in the beloved "natural method" tradition of Ørberg's Lingua Latina:
- Augustine's real words in every chapter: 50+ framed panels of his actual, unaltered Latin - the restless-heart prayer, the pear tree, the theatre paradox, the silent reader, TOLLE LEGE entire, the window at Ostia, "sērō tē amāvī," and the last lines of all thirteen books - every excerpt verified letter-for-letter against the text
- Every hard word explained in Latin in the margin - 300+ glosses, never in English: read, don't translate
- 24 chapters that take you from his cradle to his rest - childhood, Carthage, the Manichees, grief, ambition, Monica, Milan, the garden, Ostia, memory, and the famous question "What is time?"
- A story that teaches its own method: the chapter on how babies learn to speak - desire, use, context, memory - describes exactly how you are reading this book
- Cast of characters and full Latin index; macronized throughout
Augustine hated Greek class - forced vocabulary, fear, the rod - and loved the Latin he absorbed "nōn ā docentibus sed ā loquentibus" not from teachers but from speakers. He concluded that free curiosity teaches more than fearful compulsion. That sentence is this book's charter. Just the greatest conversion story ever told, at a pace that takes you along.
Who this book is for- Intermediate Latin learners - self-taught, homeschool, or classroom (readable after about two years, or alongside our other readers)
- Readers of our IVLIANVS trilogy and CONTRA GALILAEOS - you heard the last pagan's case; now hear the other advocate of the age
