Broad, C: Abroad in Japan The No. 1 Sunday Times Bestseller

Die ruhige und kluge Art des Erzählens japanischer AutorInnen begeistert mich und über diese Begeisterung ist auch ein Interesse für Land und Leute entstanden. Einer der Land und Leute kennt ist Chris Broad und in seinem Buch „Abroad in Japan“ erzählt er von seinen Abenteuern im Land der aufgehenden Sonne.   Es war mir nicht bewusst das Englisch in Japan eine Fremdsprache ist, die nur von wenigen Menschen gesprochen wird. Mittels des JET-Programms lädt das Land englische MuttersprachlerInnen ein, um in den Schulen die Lehrkräfte im Unterricht zu unterstützen. Chris Broad erfährt eher zufällig von dem Programm, bewirbt sich aus einer Laune heraus und wird nach einem erfolgreichen Interview im Januar 2012 angenommen. Im Juli 2012 reist er von London nach Tokio und zwischen den beiden Metropolen liegen nicht nur 8 Zeitzonen – es ist eine Reise in einen anderen Kulturkreis, in eine andere Welt.    Chris wird in der Präfektur Yamagata im Norden des Landes, an der Sakata Senior-High-School eingesetzt werden. Mit sehr dürftigen japanischen Sprachkenntnissen trifft er am Flughafen zum ersten Mal auf einige seiner neuen Kolleginnen und Kollegen und das Abenteuer Hilfslehrer in Japan beginnt.   Ganbatte ne, Chris-sensei! がんばってね、クリス先生！   Mir waren Chris Broad und sein im November 2012 gegründeter YouTube-Kanal „Abroad in Japan“ bisher nicht bekannt. Nachdem ich das Buch gelesen habe, habe ich mir einige seiner Beiträge angesehen. Klar, da ist zum einen der Chris Broad, der sich über die Winzigkeit seines Appartements mokiert oder die speziellen Spezialitäten der japanischen Küche mit britischem Humor zum Besten gibt. Videos, die man eben mag oder nicht.   Im Buch gibt aber auch die anderen Momente - die, in denen er mit dem japanischen Bildungssystem hadert oder von Mobbing in den Schulen und den traurigen Folgen berichtet. Die, in denen er Fukushima bereist, sich mit den Problemen der Region und den Geschichten der Menschen, die dort leben, auseinandersetzt. Er erzählt auch davon, dass er als Ausländer Diskriminierung erlebt hat, z.B. war die Wohnungssuche für ihn nicht einfach. Und nicht zuletzt berichtet er von einem Erdbeben, dass er erlebt hat.   Aus „ich gehe mal als Hilfslehrer nach Japan und gucke was so passiert“ wird schnell eine Liebe zu Leuten und Land, er reist umher, lernt die Sprache und Kanji und kommt zu der Erkenntnis:   „Ich war aber ein ganz anderer Mensch geworden.“ (S.249)   In „Abroad in Japan“ erzählt Chris Broad unterhaltsam und kurzweilig, mitunter lustig, aber auch (selbst)kritisch von seiner Zeit in Japan. Das Buch beginnt im Januar 2012 und endet im März 2022. In 29 überschaubar langen Kapiteln nimmt uns Chris mit in Restaurants, erzählt von einem interessanten Besuch beim Arzt, berichtet von den Menschen, denen er begegnet und ich habe von Seite zu Seite erlebt, wie er sich immer mehr in Land und Leute verliebt hat und angekommen ist. Dabei war es aber nicht immer alles rosaroter Kirschblütentraum, sondern es gibt auch nachdenkliche und kritische Momente und genau das macht das Buch zu einem großartigen, ehrlichen und nachvollziehbaren Leseerlebnis!   Und nur, dass wir uns richtig verstehen, ich mag das Buch nicht nur, weil das Kapitel 16 „Doctor Who“ (August 2013) heißt (und wirklich lustig ist), Mary Poppins drin vorkommt oder sein Freund Natsuki so ein großartiger Typ ist – ich mag es, weil ich die Berichte als authentisch empfunden und die Zeit mit Chris in Japan genossen habe.   Ganz große Leseempfehlung!

Ein neugieriger Engländer in Japan Allein schon die Kapitelüberschriften wecken Neugier. Worum geht es? Engländer Chris Broad nimmt einen Job als Hilfslehrer in der japanischen Provinz an. Japanisch kann er nicht, als Lehrer hat er nie gearbeitet, die Kultur ist ihm fremd. Aufregend, spannend und abwechslungsreich gestaltet sich dann der Alltag des Austauschlehrers. Dass Englisch in Japan nicht sehr beliebt ist, war neu für mich. Chris gibt sein Bestes, die Schüler zu motivieren, schließt Freundschaften mit einigen und lernt Sitten und Gebräuche besser kennen. Sogar Mobbing in dem sehr höflichen Land begegnet ihm. Der Autor schildert in lockerem Ton seine Fettnäpfchen-Fallen, Blamagen, Missgeschicke, aber natürlich auch Fortschritte und Erfolge. Selbstironisch, scharfsinnig und mit satirischen Überspitzungen verfasst er einen Japan-Report, der sich vergnüglich und trotzdem interessant liest.

Everyone with an intrest in Japan came across of one of his Videos on Youtube. With almos 3 million subscribers he's one of the most watched J-Vloggers on the Platform. His videos are a beutiful directed, shot and a edited homage to japan. Of course always with a pinch of british snotty humor, but always respectful. This book portrays not the creation and growth of his Channel, rather his time from a young british lad who went to japan to teach english in schools, his expiriences with culture and people and what living in real japan feels like. I absolutly love the book, the audiobook and his channel. If you're intrested in Japan, how life really is there, give it a big go, you won't regret it.

A Broad in Japan delivers on its premise in a straightforward way. It offers insights into Chris’s first ten years in Japan, covering his early days as an English teacher (ALT) throught to becoming one of the most prominent travel YouTubers and a passionate promoter of Japan’s northern regions (Tohoku). The book follows a chronological structure, presented in short chapters, though it tends to make larger jumps in time as it progresses. Although a German version is available, I chose to read the original English edition to fully appreciate the British humour and avoid any nuances potentially lost in translation. It’s a quick and accessible read, and interestingly, it contains very few Japanese words. When Japanese terms do appear, they are mostly written in Romaji and briefly explained. As someone who has visited Japan, is well-versed in Japanese culture, and has some proficiency in the language, many of the cultural aspects and social norms described in the book weren’t as alien or surprising to me as they might be to other readers. Nevertheless, I did find myself chuckling at times, especially when Chris is suddenly confronted with these situations without the time (or interest) to navigate the "unspoken rules". It does feel like the scenarios were somewhat carefully chosen though, perhaps due to time constraints, a tight deadline, or the usual space limitations of a book—something that becomes noticeable as the book progresses. What also became apparent fairly quickly was that certain sentences, structures, and bits of information felt very familiar. So familiar, in fact, that as a fairly regular viewer of the Abroad in Japan YouTube channel, I could often pinpoint the exact videos from which some passages seemed to be taken—word for word. Since Chris tends to repeat these trivia and life experience snippets across his videos, the book occasionally comes across as repetitive and predictable. That said, it will likely remain engaging for readers new to his content or with a general interest about life in Japan as a foreigner. Personally, it was the first half that kept me reading whilst by the second half, I found myself counting the pages. If one were to be a bit cynical, it could be seen as an “influencer book”, summarizing his YouTube career up to a certain point, reusing much of the content already shared online, and serving as a means to expand his brand and generate additional revenue. However, to be fair, there are few moments of genuinely new and worthwhile insight, particularly where he reflects more deeply on the cultural, social and personal challenges he faced in Japan — topics I personally wish he had explored further. For readers expecting a guide or a deeper exploration of the cultural context behind the scenarios, the book provides little more than the basics. It’s more of a narrative account, with just enough background to support the situations described. A more in-depth approach would have complemented the book’s tone and added value—though perhaps that was never Chris’s intention to begin with. All in all, the book is probably worth its price. After all, he even carried it up Mount Fuji—so he clearly takes pride in it and it is a fun read. If you're a regular viewer like myself, you're probably already familiar with much of the content. Unless you want to support Chris directly, there might not be a pressing need to buy the book—though it certainly looks great on the bookshelf thanks to its colourful cover art.
