Good Omens The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch

The queer energy in this one is strong. It has its weaknesses but the shortcomings are ignorable since the characters are funny, lovable and entertaining (for the most part), the humour sharp and witty and the commentary on point as ever. The story is about Armaggedon. Aziraphel and Crowley, an angel and demon respectively, are tasked to do angelic and demonic things on Earth. But during all this time, they become friends and come to enjoy human things, like food and entertainment. Both decide that Armageddon kinda s*cks so they set out to stop the Antichrist, a child, so they can continue Earthly life. The result is a highly engaging story where two authors clearly went "F*ck it, let's throw in every and any idea we have" and just rolled with everything that popped into their head. They had fun writing and I had fun reading.

Good Omens suffers from the same problem as all the Pratchett books I've read (most of them early works) - it has no actual plot. Yes, there's the original idea, the typical charming style, the usual cast of quirky characters. But this promising base material is only felted into a fluffy ball of creative cotton wool instead of strung into narrative strands and knit into a tight story. One recurring flaw in Pratchett’s work seems to be a lack of strong, active antagonists, which in turn leads to undermotivated, passive protagonists, who mostly just float through a succession of loosely connected cute scenes. This becomes even more evident in the serial adaptation of Good Omens, which is by nature way less forgiving of structural shortcomings than a novel. I mean, you know there’s something not quite right if a telly show is kinda boring despite having David Tennant in it.

After watching and loving the show to the moon and back it was a given that I had to pick up the book its based on. Good Omens is a delightful and fun read about the end of the world. Armageddon is near and the fate of almost all creation relies on an angel, a demon and many more peculiar characters that I´ve grown very fond of. While it is one hell of a fun ride, it´s also very deep and debates interesting questions hidden within sassy banter. I find it hard to put into words how and why I enjoyed this book so much so you´ll just to take a leap of faith and trust my judgement when I say: Good Omens is one of the books you should definetely read at least once. And if it´s not worn out, with dozen annotations and other signs of use then you´ve done something wrong ;D

They have misplaced the Anti-Christ and pretty much decided they really like humanity a lot more than either of their bosses.
