This story, or rather these stories, show the abysses of humankind and also the growth of people you could have never expected. It lives in the shades of grey, which was very refreshing, as we live in a time where those things too rarely seem to exist. Just because a character did this or that doesn't necessarily make them good or bad. It's an appeal to question yourself and the people around you, and an homage to the philosophers of the Enlightenment. A true masterpiece, or, to say it in Steinbeck's own words, "There is only one book to a man." This novel was his life's work, a book which, in some ways, told his own story. The storytelling is very unique, and the construction was genius. A classic that challenges you through the dialogues between its characters and conversations that will echo for a long time. Characters you root for and choices you will be disgusted by. To say it in the words of the Bible: "Timshel." Free will and human choice. And I can only recommend that you read it.
