    Gorgeous , Poignant writing

The writing is gorgeous , lyrical prose , perfect for those who wants creepy haunted house gothic fantasy but with small town romance subplot. Vivacious howl of a story indeed. I will be looking for more of the authors work !

    Mystical and Dark

A strange city with a strange house surrounded by rumors... Nobody knows for sure who lives there and why got the reputation it has until Opal. Threw a twist of fate she get's a job in Starling House and slowly starts to untangle it's story. Which is not really making her life any easier... Alix E. Harrows writing style is like no other and immediatly pulls one into the story. Her charakters are complex and on so many points relatable too, you just have to love them! I cannot recommend her books enough!

    Locked Doors, Haunted Hearts

I’ve never been the biggest fan of romance-heavy books, especially not of the current wave of ‘romantasy’ stories where the spice level often overshadows the actual plot (my opinion, sorry). But Starling House struck the right balance for me: just a bit of romance, without losing the main plot, and not tipping into territory I’d rather skip. Sure, the plot might sound familiar: an outsider growing up in a small, struggling town, trying to help her brother escape that place and dealing with personal loss, only to get drawn into the orbit of another equally haunted outsider and the strange world surrounding him (quite the mouthful). Still, Harrow’s storytelling turns the familiar into something immersive. Her writing pulled me in and the gothic undercurrent running through the story gave it the moody vibe I was hoping for. A special mention has to go to the beautiful, sporadic artwork scattered through this book and the footnotes. Small touches, but they added so much to the read. This isn’t the kind of fantasy packed with world-ending battles or back-to-back cliffhangers (stretched through multiple books). It’s kind of quieter, packed in one story (book): a dark, gothic journey through a fantasy world that feels deeply rooted in the grim realities of the one the protagonists (and also we) live in. Even though the pacing slowed here and there, Starling House is a solid standalone for anyone who wants a self-contained, beautifully written fantasy without the commitment of a sprawling series.

    Modern haunted house story

This book kept me on my toes until the very end with its dark haunted house and the cursed small town in Kentucky where people have turned a blind eye on injustice and many "bad luck" incidents for decades. Our main character is Opal, a stray that fell through the cracks, and who only survives on odd jobs, stealing, lying and her refusal to dream of things she can't have. Ironically, it is her dreams of a better future for her younger brother Jasper and her reoccurring nightmares that one day lead her to the doorstep of Starling House where she meets Arthur - whose hostile and distant behaviour seems to confirm every scary rumor surrounding the Starling property and residents. With both, Opal and Arthur being depicted as ugly, betraying and unfriendly cast aways, I worried that I would not relate enough to either of them to enjoy their story but luckily, that was not the case. The book is written beautifully and alternates between Opals and Arthur's perspective, unwrapping the many versions of how and why the town and its inhabitants were cursed. The story clearly falls into the realistic fantasy genre and is packed with the town's dark history, family lies and legends, some corporate villains and the wonderful haunted house and its creepy shadows. I wonder if the author tried to fit in too much but then again, I wouldn't know which part to skip or shorten (certainly not the slow liking of Opal and Arthur!). At the same time, I perceived the ending as a bit rushed and, at least when it comes to Opal, out of character (too soft, too patient, too understanding). Still, the book truly deserves all its praise and is a great read for every fan of gothic, realistic fantasy. (4,5/5 stars)

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Starling House my beloved

I have a tingling feeling Starling House is going to haunt me for a lot longer than I expected it to when I started the book, and God help me, I wish it would haunt me for evermore. The story follows Opal and her younger brother, two misfortunate orphans living in a town called Eden, where it seems luck has run dry for the townspeople for a long time. Opal, a ‘deadbeat’ who steals and lies to get by, has been obsessed with a haunted house on the edge of town, that is always locked behind its gates, for as long as she can remember - but when the opportunity arises and the gates open for her, the house seems to be more than just a big pile of old stone and even older rumours, a house with dark secrets underneath it – as well as all those strange tragedies that occur whenever the mist rises around it. Untangling the mystery behind the Starling House and its Wardens was probably the most fun I’ve had with a spooky fantasy stand-alone. The romance subplot was especially well done—rarely driving the plot; it instead felt like a beautiful, subtle layer woven into it. It was a refreshing break from the typical “romantasy” trend, which oftentimes drowns you in excessive romance and loses its fantasy appeal, offering moments of tension whenever something happens between them, which continuously built throughout the book. The most striking part for me, however, was Harrow's expressive, almost poetic writing. Every chapter felt like a piece of art, and the Midwest emo vibe was perfect (pro tip: listen to “Window” by Sundots while reading). Overall, ‘Starling House’ is easily in my top three reads of 2025 and if you love strange houses and even stranger men inside of them, this book is an absolute must!

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

    One of my fall favs!

Finally a new release from Alix E. Harrow! As her former novels "The Ten Thousand Doors of January" and "The Once And Future Witches" were huge successes, I was sure I would love this book even before I had read it. Did it live up to my high expectations? Absolutelly - and it even succeeded them. Harrow did a marvellous job with the overall vibe of this slow-burn gothic family drama, introducing us to characters that have been horribly scarred by life and are trying to do their best to get by. At the center of the story lies a somewhat odd and frightening children's book which was written by Eleanor Starling. Today, Arthur Starling is the last living member of his family, caring for the huge Starling mansion and its beautiful garden. However, Arthus seems to have his own kind of secrets, keeping to himself and talking to no one in town. Until he meets Opal. The story and setting of this book consumed me to the core of my being as I desperately tried to untangle gothic fantasy from reality, the scare of a seemingly innocent children's book from actual horrors. But where did Eleanor draw her inspiration from in order to write such an unusual work of fiction...? And why did she vanish without a trace after publishing it??There is only one way to find out, enjoy this book!

The romance subplot takes over once again

I admit I’m a little disappointed, since I wanted Starling House to lean more into the Horror/Mystery aspects of the story, but it works in this case. It’s not a typical haunted house mystery – the house itself is far from being a hostile entity. It’s more of a small town mystery with heavy focus on romance and family drama. I liked Opals character a lot though. She’s a well-written, flawed and complex heroine. But since I expected this story to be much darker in tone, it still kind of missed the mark for me a little. Still a good read.

    Modern Gothic Romance Deluxe

Wow!
