Dark and twisted family roots threaten to strangle their home's foundations in this chilling haunted house novel from the award-winning master of modern horror, T. Kingfisher.
In this ordinary North Carolina suburb, family secrets are always in bloom.
Samantha Montgomery pulls into the driveway of her family home to find a massive black vulture perched on the mailbox, staring at the house.
Inside, everything has changed. Gone is the eclectic warmth Sam expects; instead the walls are a sterile white. Now, it's very important to say grace before dinner, and her mother won't hear a word against Sam's long-dead and little-missed grandmother, who was the first to put down roots in this small southern town.
The longer Sam stays, the stranger things get. And every day, more vultures circle overhead...

Everything wrong with Grandmas roses
This was absolutely terrifying. And by that I mean that I might have reoccurring nightmares. But was it good? Definitely. I really enjoy the books from T. Kingfisher and I am glad to say that I have never been disappointed. So, if you have not yet discovered this author - what are you waiting for? -

"the roses say...say you prayers"
I saw someone describe this book as 'mundane horror' and I couldn't agree more! It's twisted and confusing, but also perfectly nice and normal. I am now totally obsessed with this book, but also...if I ever see multiple vultures perched near and looking at ONE single house... i run :) -

Blooming with interest
Unexpected, humorous, likable and frighteningly good. Just another splendid horror story by Kingfisher that captivates you and won't let you out of their thorny grasp. It has the authors handwriting written all over it: charismatic characters, witty humor and bone-chilling twists. I loved every bit about it and read it more or less in one go. Sure, the reader knew (kind of) what was happening (or accepted it sooner) than Samantha, the protagonist, but it was still endearing to follow her train of thoughts. No matter your theories, the ending will still be totally different — and that's something I love about Kingfisher's stories. They are new and out of the box. Sure, there are cliches, but they need to be in every good horror story. Definitely recommended if you enjoy haunted houses and unpleasant grandmothers! -

Definitely Chilled Me to The Bones!
I don't know why it took me so long, to read one of Kingfisher's books. This one has been on my TBR for quite a while and I'm so glad I finally read it! Southern gothic horror, a lot of humor and a haunted house. What else do I have to say? Well, probably my opinion. How surprising can that be - I loved it! So the book is about Sam, coming home to stay with her mum for a while and she is quickly realising, that something seems off. There is a lot of creepy stuff happening in the house. Being a scienist, Sam tries to see the logic in all of the madness. I mean we are talking about weird birds (vultures... but they are creepy, okay) and ladybug invasions. Very creepy. But in a good way. Sam is a great protagonist, with her quirky sense of humor and the PUNS!!! You'd have to PUNish me, in order to stop me from responding in the same way. Another atmospheric and gothic read, that I couldn't put down.
