The Salt Grows Heavy

A mermaid, a plague doctor, a village of (somewhat) immortal children and three self proclaimed gods. All those things promised a great story - and the author did not disappoint! Khaw build a really interesting world and tells about the Little Mermaids‘ fate and her „Happy Ever After“. Although this short novella contains strings of a love story, this is a horror book through and through. There are several graphic depictions of body horror and monsters. Still the story did not revolve exclusively around that. Altogether „The Salt Grows Heavy“ really impressed me by being merely over 100 pages long yet it fells slow and fast paced at the same time - but never boring or rushed.

In diesem Buch wird eine unglaublich interessante Welt aufgebaut, spannende Charakterdynamiken vorgestellt und ein tiergehender Plot angeteasert ... und dann ist das Buch vorbei. Wenn man sich darüber bewusst ist, dass das Buch nur knapp über 100 Seiten lang ist und die meisten vorgestellten Sachen nicht weiterausgeführt werden, kann man hier ein schönes Leseerlebnis haben. Aber man sollte sich nichts vormachen; dieses Buch hätte mehr Seiten gebraucht, um seine Geschichte zufriedenstellend erzählen zu können. Außerdem sei davor gewarnt: Der Schreibstil wirft mit komplizierten Beschreibungen und Fremdwörtern um sich wo immer es geht. Sicher haben damit selbst Muttersprachler zu kämpfen und als frischer Englisch-Lerner hat man vielleicht nicht so viel Spaß. Ich hab einfach schnell akzeptiert, dass ich manches nicht verstehe und fand den Schreibstil dann eigentlich sogar passend für die Art des Charakters zu denken und zu sprechen.

A visceral and poetic masterpiece of fantastic horror - deeply evocative and terrifyingly beautiful. Cassandra Khaws unbelievably laconic and poignant writing style is nothing short of awe-inspiring. I’m in love.
