The strangest novella, in the best way imaginable
Imagine a mermaid, who murdered her husband and thus caused the fall of an empire, and a plague doctor who stumble upon a village cult revolving around three so-called saints and include a bunch of murderous children... Sounds weird? It absolutely is, but in a strangely perfect way. If you love Christina Henry and Eric LaRocca and don't mind a bit of gore, this one is right up your alley! A short and twisted novella, picking up the weirdest bits of mermaid myths. -

Martyrs are more powerful than Gods
Rarely have I experienced this much atmosphere in such a short novel. Through the setting of this little village, inhabited by children who worship three men as gods, our two protagonists come face to face with a cruel reality of the world they live in. Just like in "The Dead take the A-Train", the writing style is marked by colourful language, giving gory detail while a hauntingly quiet atmosphere lays itself over the whole story. With a calm intensity, you watch brief conversations turn into blunt violence. Even though I wished for a bit more pages to develop the blooming relationship between the characters and more time to explore the companionship, I did enjoy this book a lot. Everyone looking for a good and unsettling evening read should definitely try this, because this is a masterclass in being unsettling. -
