The Reappearance of Rachel Price

The Reappearance of Rachel Price by Holly Jackson had me hooked from the first page to the last, and I’m giving it 5 stars. The story centers on Bel, whose mother, Rachel, disappeared without a trace years ago. When Rachel suddenly reappears, the family’s life is turned completely upside down. As Bel tries to figure out what really happened back then, more and more secrets come to light, and the truth seems to get more complicated with every chapter. Once again, I was particularly impressed by the characters. Bel is a fantastic protagonist, quick-witted, smart, and authentic. Her personality is incredibly fun, and she carries the story perfectly. Something I noticed: Anyone familiar with Holly Jackson’s books will probably, like me, find themselves actively trying to solve the mystery. As a result, some parts of the plot can be figured out relatively early on. That didn’t bother me at all, though, because it’s exactly this kind of active engagement that makes her books so special to me. Still, the ending managed to surprise me. The plot twist was well-executed and gave the story the perfect conclusion. I found the “female revenge” trope, in particular, to be incredibly well-executed, and I was absolutely thrilled by the ending. Overall, The Reappearance of Rachel Price is a gripping thriller with great characters, a riveting plot, and a powerful finale.
