Kuang has crafted an incredibly dense, meticulously researched, and deeply atmospheric novel. The magic system based on etymology is really unique, making the act of translation itself feel both wondrous and devastatingly dangerous. It is a slow-burn, thought-provoking exploration of colonialism, racism, and the heavy price of complicity. The emotional bond between the core group of students is beautifully written. If you love dark academia with an on-point social commentary, and a story that will leave you absolutely breathless, this is a monumental must-read!
