    sehr gut

    Man muss es mögen, auf der Meta-Ebene zu lesen und nicht auf der reinen Story-Ebene. Man muss auch offen sein für bestimmte politische Themen (wie Kolonialisierung, strukturelle Benachteiligung etc). Ich habe es sehr genossen.

    Babel by R.F. Kuang is in absolutely breathtaking. This Book shines with beautiful and complex world-building, characters with motivations and distinct personalities, and a deepy academic theme. Such a worthwhile book, you´ll keep thinking about it for weeks to come!

    Maybe my new favorite

    When I started reading the book I had no ifea how big the impact and the intensity of the plot could be. I am in pure awe of how amazing both the plot and the writing style are. Though the story seems merely interesting in the beginning, the story evolves into something that one might never really forget. The hints all come together until the events and emotions the characters experience spiral out of control. Stunning.

    An Incredible Read That Will Fuel Your Decolonial Rage

    This book hits hard and will fire up your rage against imperial colonialism. Kuang's use of magical realism is fascinating, and she brilliantly lays bare just how sneaky and all-encompassing colonialism is, seeping into every corner of international society. Her storytelling doesn’t just make you reflect; it leaves you with that gut-wrenching realization that these colonial legacies are still very much alive and kicking today. For all the language nerds and polyglots out there, this book is an absolute gem. It dives deep into the etymology and evolution of words across multiple languages, and it’s an absolute joy to explore. Kuang is a genius, and this book is a total page-turner. It’s a cathartic read that hits home, especially if you grew up in white 'global-north' countries that are still perpetuating harm and colonial practices against our countries of origin. A must-read—I wish I could experience it again for the first time.

Für Menschen, die sich für Linguistik interessieren oder Fans von Dark Academia sind, ist dieses Buch ein Muss. Eines meiner absoluten Lieblinge.

    “An act of translation is always an act of betrayal.”

    Easily one of the most beautiful and devastating books I have read in a while. R.F. Kuang has created a work that feels so real, you sometimes forget there´s magic and fantasy involved. A critique of the academic world, while also touching on subjects of colonization, racism and sexism in the 19th century. This book manages to cover all these aspects and their overlap in a truly devastating but beautiful story, as we follow four university students through their years of studying translation and silverwork – the skills that magic is based on. But nothing is as wonderful and prestigious as it first seems once a look behind the curtains of privilege reveals what is being taken in order to hold this system up.

    How can I recover from such a book?

    It's hard to describe how much this story affected me. Colonialism, cultural identity, racism - only a few of the many topics that are discussed in depth throughout the book. The magic system fascinated me. Although it's unique, it's also subtle in a way. It's a fantastical element but somehow it felt absurdly realistic in the way it was integrated into daily life. And to learn so much about language, its development and its meaning in connection to the magic was extremely exciting. The characters themselves grew on me so much, which made reading through everything they experienced so much more painful in return. This book left a hole in my chest. It felt so powerful and beautifully sad, I couldn't stop thinking about it for a while after I finished reading it. Such an impactful and heartbreaking story.
