I found the book extremely educational, as I barely knew how long tuberculosis had existed. The story of Henry, a tuberculosis patient from Sierra Leone, was particularly impressive. It was touching to read whether Henry would survive the disease. The book begins and ends with Henry's story, which nicely ties the story together. The book shows that many well-known figures suffered from tuberculosis in the past. In this context, John Green also explains how the perception of the disease has changed: from a disease of poets that primarily affected the rich, it became a disease of the poor, which is unfortunately still associated with stigma today. While the disease is almost extinct in Europe and the USA, cases have increased significantly in poor countries like Sierra Leone. This highlights how diverse the situation is around the world. An interesting point is the discovery of a cure, which represented a major step forward in the fight against tuberculosis. I found the comparisons between how tuberculosis is treated in Sierra Leone and the United States particularly fascinating. This clearly shows how financial constraints influence treatment options. Overall, it's a very insightful read that sheds light on both the medical and social aspects of tuberculosis. I highly recommend the book to anyone who wants to learn more about this ancient, yet still relevant disease.

Fascinating book about an illness I thought died together with 19th century poets. Green shows quickly that not only is tuberculosis is everywhere and very much alive, but also connected to so many events in history like WW1. I learned so much about the inequality of healthcare all over the world and how we could (theoretically) overcome it. Especially Henry's life story was extremely touching and explained how a disease can affect not only one's health but also their social life.
