Powerless

"The Hunger Games" meets fantasy—and while it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, the story was thoroughly entertaining! In a world where people with special powers rule over others, Paedyn isn't one of the chosen few. She is an "Ordinary"—powerless and, by all accounts, without a chance. To survive, she has to hide her lack of magic and scrape by using her wits, courage, and unique skills. When she ends up in the King’s brutal competition, keeping her secret becomes increasingly difficult. There, of all people, she crosses paths with Kai—the prince—someone she really ought to stay far away from. The basic premise certainly reminded me of "The Hunger Games": a cruel competition where participants must give their all just to survive. It may not reinvent the genre, but the execution is simply brutal and entertaining. The competition is brutal and, at times, unforgiving, yet this creates real tension and keeps the story moving at a breakneck pace. My absolute highlights, however, were Paedyn and Kai. The dynamic between them is brilliant! Their verbal sparring, the tension, and that constant back-and-forth kept me thoroughly entertained. For me, "Powerless" is, above all, a really amazing read. I devoured it and am definitely looking forward to seeing what happens next.
