A darkly magical retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen" for fans of Ava Reid and Katherine Arden, from the New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of Nettle & Bone.
Gerta has been in love with her neighbor, Kay, for as long as she can remember. Kay thinks Gerta is...fine.
When Kay is stolen away by the mysterious Snow Queen, it's up to Gerta to find him. Her journey will take her through a dangerous land of snow and witchcraft, spirit roads and shape-shifters. Accompanied by a talking raven and a strangely entrancing bandit girl named Janna, Gerta travels further north than north to confront the Snow Queen and rescue Kay.
The journey will be dangerous, but the unpredictable currents of her own heart might be the most frightening thing of all.

Powdery snow, a mission and magic
Gerta’s best friend, Kay, is kidnapped by the Snow Queen, so of course Gerta sets out to get him back. Along the way, she meets new friends, discovers love, learns what true friendship really means, and finds herself in the process. A beautiful story, perfect for the cold season. -

T. Kingfisher really knows how to write a good retelling
Generally this Story is about a girl named Gertha who is set on saving her childhood best friend and maybe-true-love Kay from the Snowqueen, who is known for kidnapping boys and freezing them, ones she´s done with them. On her resque mission Gertha encounters a lot of different people and creatures that help her on her way. The Story is rather short but still fully packed with myths, magic and a nice portion of whimsy.
