A NEW TOP3 BOOK HAS ENTERED THE VILLA

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Obsessive much? Slay mama

„None of this means anything. That’s the truth. Beneath it all, beneath everything we spend all our lives creating, are we all like this?“ A one-hit-wonder author, Mallory, is desperate to escape her life and write another book. After she spontaneously downloads the gay dating app Grindr to do some research, she has a chance encounter with Leo, a young addict, looking for his next fix. What follows is a cat-and-mouse of obsession, exploitation and support. I was sceptical at first but the novel really grew into itself over the course. The take on Leo is refreshing - there’s no tragic backstory, no narrative reason for why he turned out to become an addict. Sometimes, that happens. Now, Silver does not shy away from showing the dangers of chem sex and the exhaustion of addiction. Leo is mean and manipulative but he can’t help himself. No worse, Mallory feeds into this with her need to dig deep into some sort of trauma to write her book about. It’s her perspective that took time to grow on me. As her domestic situation unfolds and we start to see the cracks, we can gauge similarities between Mal and Leo that make them end up gravitating towards eachother. The bits I cared about least were the publishing ins and outs. The third act petered out slightly but found a resolution that was satisfying and created a nice narrative loop. While not entirely a fit, I would say ‚Baby Reindeer‘ on Netflix might pair well thematically with this book. Definite recommend.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

One of my favourite reads of the year so far!

The writing is incredibly fresh, modern and easy to read. Packed with unexpected twists, the story centers on the dynamic between Mal and Leo, which is equally chaotic as engaging. An enjoyable read that kept me hooked from start to finish.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

Whose story are we allowed to tell?

It is pretty hard to summarize this book in a very short commentary, but in the end, what really stayed with me is the question: whose story are we allowed to tell? Our protagonist, Mallory, seems to have it all: a seemingly perfect husband and a great house in London, paid for by the book deal she received seven years ago. But her success as a writer lies somewhere in the past, and Mallory is not just bored but alienated by her life. To cure her writer’s block, she seeks answers on Reddit and finds a post that asks her to: go gay, go sad, go dark. Mallory creates a Grindr profile using her husband’s nudes to accumulate information about gay dating in London. That same night, she gets invited to a sex party, where she meets Leo, a young gay man whose life is a mess. But Mallory is fascinated by him and by her desire to help him change his life, while simultaneously stealing his story for her new book. Sooner or later, everything gets really messy, and Mallory’s life is changed for good when the lines between who is stalking whom become blurred.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Dark, Queer, Crazy!

In Josh Silver's „Fruit Fly” we follow in two separate points of views a retired author and therapist called Mallory, who’s suffering under the control of her manipulative husband and a drug addict Leo, who soon becomes Mallory’s center of life. After years of struggling to find inspiration for a new book. Looking up topics which inspires and shooks people nowadays, she’s confronted with the devastating reality of young men, having sex for money, to afford their needs for drugs. Mallory gets inspired by the story of Leo and things start to get crazy real quick. I really enjoyed the style of writing. It felt really dark, weird and melancholic. At the middle I thought it’s gonna become the best book I’ve read this year. When I finished it, I didn’t understand how something so well thought of can turn into such a mess. Towards the end, I felt like we lost ourself, similar to Mallory, who lost herself, her brother and Leo in the process of writing her book. Nevertheless, I quietly enjoyed the dark approach the book took.
