Rezension

This sweet, kindhearted, and deeply sympathetic magical realist novel about middle school dropouts pulling each other back from the brink will resonate with readers of all ages. Publishers Weekly, starred review

[A] moving psychological journey . . . blazingly honest . . . Tsujimura is a master at projecting these young anxieties onto the page, offering hints and shadows and silhouettes of what the world might be like once we finally grow up, and how difficult it is to take that first step. Tor.com

A gorgeous, wrenching fantasy that lays bare the anxieties and desperation as well as small triumphs of adolescence. Locus

In a world where there is so much untruth, so much altered reality, so many superficial existences forming even more superficial relationships, this book turns back the clock and reminds us of what is real, and what truly matters: compassion and kindness, the strength in our bonds, and how we can find those right beside us. The Yorkshire Times

A moving, reflective and surprising novel . . . Anyone who has ever struggled with feeling isolated, had difficulties at school, or had mental health struggles, will find this novel to be a cleansing balm. Culturefly

[A] respectful, moving novel about teenage bullying in the Tokyo suburbs . . . Tsujimura shows how easily misunderstandings and miscommunications can escalate, and treats everyone even the bullies with nuance. The Japan Times

An innovative and tender blend of social commentary and magical realism. The Japan Society Review

Genuinely affecting . . . a story about collaboration, empathy and sharing truths, a modern, all-ages fairy tale that should appeal to fans of Neil Gaiman and Studio Ghibli animations. The Financial Times

Hopeful and heartbreakingly sweet without ever being saccharine, this character-focused tale of finding unexpected community unfolds remarkably gently, eschewing a typical Western plot structure. Readers will leave with their faith in humanity restored. Publishers Weekly s Best Books of 2022

Part Miyazaki fairytale, part teen romance, it s strange and beautiful imagine the offspring of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and The Virgin Suicides. The Guardian

    Lonely Castle

    My favourite book.

This will always be one of my (very few) 5* ratings. I love this book with all of my heart. It managed to make me cry with a single word. I wish I had a signed copy so badly. Can't wait for more books from Mizuki Tsujimura.

    Heart wrenching & hear warming

A beautiful novel that totally took me by surprise. It deals with the topic of bullying and social anxiety so well and at the same time it's magical & mysterious. I absolutely loved this reading experience.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    ganz wunderbar

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    a tender yet emotional tale

4.75* This is a tender yet emotional tale about daily survival, the power of friendship self-love, and the state of our society and the school system. A story about 7 kids who can't attend school for various reasons and get invited through their wall mirrors into a castle in another world. There, they can spend their time instead of alone at home while also looking for a key to unlock a wish come true. But that mission is just secondary compared to the connections of trust and support these children learn to form with each other. The novel shines a light on the mental state of many school children in Japan in general and particularly on the various reasons children might not be capable of attending school. In that aspect, the novel did a remarkably great job of being respectful, not preachy, and very careful of a realistic portrayal of the children's circumstances. None of the background stories seemed over the top dramatic or scandalous, but still infuses them with emotion and understanding. I loved how realistic the struggle, the inner walls, the setbacks, and the very slow opening up between the members of the group were described. It's a journey back to oneself, about the importance of supportive relationships and trust in oneself and others. I don't want to spoil the end, but all the revelations had me crying my eyes out, and I think the story wrapped up beautifully. Such a great start into a new reading year.

    A new favourite

What started off as a nice, mysterious & adventurous fantasy turned out as one of the best and most heartbreaking books I've ever read - heartbreaking in a good way though. A truly precious & unique read. This is one of these books you wish you could read again for the first time...

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

“In another world, we were already friends.”

A really moving story about bullying, friendship, and mental health, diving deep into the internal world of its teenage characters. Kokoro’s hesitance to reach out for help showcased the complexity of adolescence - caught between the desire for independence and the longing for support. There is a bit of a mystery sprinkled into the book with a few twists that were hidden in minuscule clues which all came together seamelessly and made for quite the emotional ending. While the pacing was a bit slow in the beginning, and I wish the book would have taken more time to dive into the root cause for the bullying and loneliness of the kids in this society, it ultimately shines a light on the magic of connection and emphasizes how empathy and kindness make all the difference.
