    Trapped in possibility

This is one of those rare books that burrow into your soul. Sylvia Plath’s raw, poetic prose captures the suffocating weight of expectation and the fragility of identity with haunting precision. The fig tree analogy struck me deeply—the paralyzing fear of choosing just one path, watching possibilities wither before they can be grasped. Esther’s descent into darkness is painfully real, yet Plath’s writing makes even despair feel beautiful. This novel isn’t just a story; it’s an experience—one that lingers long after the final page.

    Tolles Buch!

In some ways ahead of her time

Although the book deals with a lot of themes around depression and suicide and could be seen as predominantly sad, I loved Sylvia Plath's writing. The book is semi-autobiographical and therefore based on real events from her life. Her description of day to day tasks or feelings are incredibly detailed and allow the reader to imagine/feel them exactly the way they are. The depiction of a young woman struggling to find her place in society, so indecisive of what to do with her life that she ultimately decides to do nothing at all, captivated me. It's really interesting how a lot of "critical" topics like religion, homosexuality and feminism are discussed in the book. In some terms, you can definitely say that Sylvia Plath is ahead of her time. Another fascinating aspect for me was that  through her writing Sylvia Plath creates a way to make such an "unrelatable" character relatable. It's heartbreaking to see how mentally ill people were treated in the 50s, and I'm sure that Sylvia Plath would've had a much longer life if she grew up in today's society. It's a very captivating book and I can see why it is a coming of age classic.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    I am. I am. I am.

An absolute classic and THE book about the struggles of modern women before the 21st century. Mental health, social issues and a beautiful, yet quiet language come together in a haunting narrative about the struggles and rewards of being alive.

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    I am. I am. I am.

A truly bizarre book that had me hooked from the very start. This book encapsulated today's phenomenon of a "Weird Girl Summer" perfectly: The hot and bustling streets of New York in the middle of June, cocktail parties, loud men and a fashion intern, facing the existential dread of being alive in this world. Such a compelling and gripping read, one of my new favorites.

“I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart. I am, I am, I am.”

Sylvia Plath's 'The Bell Jar' was both an empathetic and agonizing experience. It follows 19-year-old Esther Greenwood through the mental breakdown she experiences and her attempts to recover. This book portrays authentic emotions and accurately portrays depression. Through the story's progression, you gain a deeper understanding of her emotional state and the choices she's making. Sylvia Plath's way of describing raw emotions felt realistic and coherent. It sucks you into the story and doesn't let you go, even after finishing the last page.

timeless classic about struggeling with mental health

The bell jar is a timeless novel about struggeling with mental health. I was impressed by the way mental illness is portrayed, because you don't notice, that the novel was written in the 60s. In addition "the bell jar" is quite simillar to "the catcher in the rye" and I can recommend both of them to read in your twenties.

"Don`t let the wicked city get you down"

This book touched my soul. It cured me. It cured me with the words I never found myself. It feels so good to know that someone has found the perfect words for such feelings. I've never had the need to quote books, but here I just couldn't help but read passage after passage. It's not just a book, for me it's a literary masterpiece. But it addresses very hard topics so: take care
