The Adventures of Tom Bombadil

Tom Bombadil embodies fulfillment. Seldom do you find characters that have little ambition and aspiration. Reading about a character who is wholly devoid of such characteristics is hence practically unheard of - with the exception of jolly old Tom who is perfectly content with his life. Selfishness and greed are not part of Bombadil's vocabulary, and thank Eru Ilúvatar for that. It is an absolute delight to read these beautifully written poems that portray his jovial and good-humored self, as well as his ability to stay in high spirits even in the face of misfortune. ''The Adventure's of Tom Bombadil'' features some of Tolkien's best prose. Each of the 16 poems that are included are enchanting in their own way, the two starring Bombadil especially so. In hindsight, it is quite funny that the wizard with the long blue jacket, yellow boots, flushed cheeks and weathered old hat is not only older, but likely also more powerful than any other being in Middle-Earth. After all, he is one of the few beings able to withstand the corruption of the one ring which is a tremendous feat in itself. Tom Bombadil is therefore not only a merry fellow, but an incredibly powerful one at that. Thus his adventures should not be amiss in any Tolkien collection.
