As he and his close-knit cohort of fellow outsiders navigate their elite education, they are inevitably forced to confront the brutal, imperialistic machinery they are helping to maintain. Kuang has crafted an incredibly dense, meticulously researched, and deeply atmospheric novel. The magic system based on etymology is really unique, making the act of translation itself feel both wondrous and devastatingly dangerous. It is a slow-burn, thought-provoking exploration of colonialism, racism, and the heavy price of complicity. The emotional bond between the core group of students is beautifully written. If you love dark academia with an on-point social commentary, and a story that will leave you absolutely breathless, this is a monumental must-read!

Easily one of the most beautiful and devastating books I have read in a while. R.F. Kuang has created a work that feels so real, you sometimes forget there´s magic and fantasy involved. A critique of the academic world, while also touching on subjects of colonization, racism and sexism in the 19th century. This book manages to cover all these aspects and their overlap in a truly devastating but beautiful story, as we follow four university students through their years of studying translation and silverwork – the skills that magic is based on. But nothing is as wonderful and prestigious as it first seems once a look behind the curtains of privilege reveals what is being taken in order to hold this system up.

It's hard to describe how much this story affected me. Colonialism, cultural identity, racism - only a few of the many topics that are discussed in depth throughout the book. The magic system fascinated me. Although it's unique, it's also subtle in a way. It's a fantastical element but somehow it felt absurdly realistic in the way it was integrated into daily life. And to learn so much about language, its development and its meaning in connection to the magic was extremely exciting. The characters themselves grew on me so much, which made reading through everything they experienced so much more painful in return. This book left a hole in my chest. It felt so powerful and beautifully sad, I couldn't stop thinking about it for a while after I finished reading it. Such an impactful and heartbreaking story.
