Über die Kraft von Büchern und Begegnungen

What Are You Looking For Is in the Library is a touching and reflective collection of interconnected short stories that gently remind us of the power of books, human connection, and small steps toward change. Each protagonist carries their own struggles, but through chance encounters, book recommendations, and newfound perspectives, they begin to shift their beliefs and take action in their lives. One of the aspects I loved most was how the stories were linked - not just through the library itself. The connections between characters felt organic. It’s crazy how much I saw parts of myself in each of their thoughts, hesitations, and realizations. The lessons they learned weren’t necessarily new or groundbreaking, but that’s exactly what made them so important. Sometimes, we need to be reminded of the things we already know but tend to forget in the rush of life. What stood out to me was that change didn’t come just from the books they were recommended, but also from the way they began to see themselves and also the people around them differently. Some of them built deeper, warmer connections, some just created their own small communities of support. That warmth and quiet transformation made this book so special to me. Many moments in this novel touched my heart, and the fact that I read an annotated copy gifted by a friend, made the experience even more meaningful. It’s a book that encourages reflection, appreciation for everyday moments, and the gentle reminder that sometimes, what we’re looking for is already within reach.

This book has my heart! Wonderful~

This book entirely changed my perspective on life. It tells the stories of five individuals living in Tokyo, Japan. All of them visit the library for different reasons and meet Mrs. Komachi the librarian who recommends them books that will change their perspective on their current situation forever. I just adore books about books and about the magical experience that reading can provide. Love it & highly recommend! Go read it now! Go!

    Charming collection of stories

Inspirational tales, all connected with a mysterious librarian. This book just makes you feel good! I’ve read it during my vacation in Japan, it’s a great lecture to read on train rides or on an airplane.

    Coziness in books

I really enjoyed this collection of 5 short stories, where the people find new sense/ideas through book recommendations from the local librarian. It’s a really cozy and easy read. Also made me think about my own experiences sometimes. Would read it again! :)

    A pleasent enough read

Albeit not liking the idea of several “short stories” I found the connection between them really beautiful, but could have been a few more “crossovers” between them. The different culture of the whole book made it feel very “fresh” and made me curious. If it had been slightly more humourous and the stories being a little more intertwined, it could have, maybe, become a 5 star.

What you are looking for is exactly this book (and this amazing review...)

''What you are looking for is in the library'' follows the stories of five people, each searching for a purpose or a new direction in life. Each of them finds their way to this special library at a time when they need help. This read was just so heartwarming and it definitely made me think about my own purpose in life and what I can achieve by changing my beliefs (even if it's just a small change). It's all about perspective. I also got a lot of joy out of making connections between each story, as it made me proud of myself for being this observant.

If possible I would give it 10 stars!

Since I enjoyed Kawaguchi's "Before The Coffee Gets Cold" - series and Nick Bradley's "The Cat And The City" and "Four Seasons" immensely, I knew beforehand that I would love this book as well. With high expectations I began to read and was embraced by five short stories whose protagonists cross paths one way or another without being aware of it. Working in retail as well, I related instantly to the first story and felt utterly understood by the questions that were raised and the overall vibe of Takako's depressed feelings. However, the book constantly moves forward in such a gentle and hopeful manner that there is absolutely no choice but to feel encouraged, uplifted and reassured that each and every person's life makes a difference in the world. As the story progresses to its last short story, I almost shouted out with joy "YES! Yes, that's exactly it!! That's why I'm working in a bookshop!" when Chie explains: "If I can sell a book that I think is good, then I'm happy. Because the books I recommend feel a little bit like my own." When recommending this book to you, be sure that I already wove a deep connection to it and in this way I recommend a huge deal of my own feelings and attitude - enjoy this precious treasure of a book and may you too find yourself between the pages.

    This is an inspirational series...

This is an inspirational series of connected short stories about people at a turning point in their lives, finding guidance and friendship in a local library. The set up was a bit repetitive, but the individual stories and character were all unique and moving.
