Cult of the Lamb Vol. 1: The First Verse The First Verse

Having recently played the game, I was overjoyed to discover there was a graphic novel to accompany it! The story follows Lamb on a quest for vengeance after being sacrificed by the Bishops of the Old Faith and subsequently resurrected by He Who Waits. Along the way, Lamb gathers followers for his cult while working to save Darkwood from the evils of the Bishops. The artwork (by Troy Little) really impressed me with this one! The bold and bright colors, and the cutesy, exaggerated features are given an edge by the creepy and the violent elements of the story. It’s balanced perfectly! The story itself matches the overall plot of the game. Yet, where the game jumps headfirst into action, the graphic novel goes about things slower, which I found is the perfect approach to an adaptation like this. While it's only a small change from the game's pacing, it makes the graphic novel feel much more immersive rather than simply rehashing the same story beat for beat. Overall, this is a fantastic graphic novel. I'd happily recommend it even to readers who haven't played the game!

This graphic novel is a result of a Kickstarter whose goal was reached within minutes! You could say its made for the loving fanbase but you can also enjoy this if you never played the videogame. The overall story contains all the same key elements / plot as the game but also introduces some more .. lets say personal level / drama. Overall its full of cute animals, rituals and a lot of gore / carnage - love it!

I have actually never played the game myself, but heard a great deal about it, so I cannot say too much about how the novel compares to the game, but the novel can easily stand on it's own, which is a plus. We follow our main character Lamb, who is offered the chance to revenge their death in return for starting a cult in the name of an old god in order to overthrow the new gods. The stroy and it's characters were rich and had an interesting depth, and the drawing style is expresssively detailed, though in some parts a bit graphic, but still quite cute. I highly reccommend this book to fans of the game, but even if you haven't played it (yet) the novel is really great on its own as well! I'm already looking forward to the next volume to see where the story leads us and what dicisions Lamb makes regarding the way they want to lead their cult.
