Feel-good science fiction

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

This book, though not without flaws, was awesome. This novel has been labeled as "feel-good science fiction" and I completely agree! I need more books like this one. A heads up though: this book is more character driven than plot or action driven. I don't mind that but it is not everybody's cup of tea. So be warned. So, what mustn't a character driven book lack? Of course, great characters! I never got bored because I found the characters to be so well written and developed. We have multiple POVs, so we get to know everybody on board the Wayfarer. I had to get used to that because I initially thought that we'd stick more closely to Rosemary, it sounded like that when reading the description, but I quickly adapted to the multiple POVs. I adored Sissix and Kizzy, they were my favorites. They are each in their own way warm and bubbly characters. I never quite connected with the others, though, which is very sad. There are all these interesting alien species and alien cultures we read about, the worldbuilding was wonderfully done. The cast and characters were also effortlessly diverse, without preaching or rubbing it into our noses. It just felt natural to have many different genders and races and it being NORMAL. God, I loved that! The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet was compared to the TV-series Firefly and I agree, I can see the similarities: space opera, awesome characters, aliens, alien culture, different planets, focus on characters. But Firefly had more action and overall plot (and a Western theme). (Side note: I love Firefly. One of the best TV shows if you ask me.) What bothered me was that interesting scenes were skipped. For example, a chapter ends with some revelation and a character has to tell the others and in the next chapter there's a time jump and that's it, maybe one or two sentences explaining what happened but we don't get to know and see more. Also, fyi: this book and the second one can be read as standalones. Another side note: that cover is sooooo beautiful!

The perfect comfort book

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

Becky Chambers knows how to make you feel good through her writing! I read a couple of her books before and each just made me feel right at home and like I belong in this world. I quickly fell in love with each character of this mismatched crew and was absolutely devastated when the book ended! I easily could have spent more hours just reading about their journey through space. The worldbuilding was, once again, perfection. Nothing was left unanswered for me personally, everything was well thought through. Each and every species was interesting and very distinguished in how their societal norms work, how they look and behave. And: humans weren't the norm. They were never, in any way, described as superior which was really interesting and a novelty to me in the Sci-Fi / Fantasy genre. Throughout the story, and also in her other works, Becky Chambers proves that we can all overcome our differences and live along peacefully. A wholesome book that leaves you with a warm feeling and absolute happiness - and the need to immediately dive into the next book in the series!

Willkommen auf der Wayfarer!

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)
