The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet

Ich bin kein großer Fan von SCIFI aber habe nur Gutes von Becky Chambers gehört. Deswegen habe ich mir gedacht ich schaue mir das Buch einmal an. Es ist eine wunderbare Geschichte mit interessanten Charakteren und ich kann es kaum erwarten, den Rest der Serie zu Lesen!

ich werde immer die zielgruppe für bücher sein, in denen ganz normale leute (und mitglieder diverser alienrassen) ganz normale (für post-apokalyptische zukunftsstandards) dinge tun. endlich konnte ich mein seit monaten anhaltendes bedürfnis nach science fiction literatur erfüllen — mit einem buch, dessen plot mich überrascht hat und dessen charaktere mir alle sehr ans herz gewachsen sind. sie alle wirken sehr authentisch, sehr greifbar und nahbar, die dynamiken zwischen den crewmitgliedern war sehr schön zu entdecken und auch die konflikte, die sie alle hatten und bekommen sollten, waren stellenweise unvorhergesehen, dennoch nachvollziehbar und spannend. einfach ein rundes ding, das zu lesen sehr viel freude bereitet hat!

Ich wusste nicht, dass ich Cozy Sci-Fi in meinem Leben brauchte, aber ja, ich brauche es. Und ich schäme mich etwas, dass dieses Buch drei oder vier Jahre auf meinem SuB lag und ich einen Buddyread brauchte, um es in die Hand zu nehmen. "The Long Way to a small angry Planet" ist ein Paradebeispiel für den Trope Found Family. Rosemary stößt neu zur Crew des Tunneling-Schiffs Wayfarer hinzu, und während es eine übergreifende Handlung mit einem Tunneling-Auftrag gibt (das Anlegen von Sprungtoren/-pfaden im Weltraum, und dieser Auftrag am Ende des Buchs auch wichtig wird, ist es doch mehr eine Geschichte der verschiedenen Crewmitglieder, ihrer Beziehungen zueinander, ihrer Vergangenheiten, ihrer Träume und Wünsche und wie sie sich dabei gegenseitig unterstützen. Und das ist wunderbar wärmend, divers, witzig, tiefgründig und trotz Alienvölkern, Raumschiffen und fremden Welten sehr menschlich und lebensnah geschrieben. Die anderen Bände der Wayfarer-Trilogie stehen jedenfalls fest auf meiner Leseliste - und ich werde dieses Mal nicht wieder drei oder vier Jahre mit dem Lesen warten.

I found the book quite enganging, even though it is an unusual kind of science-fiction book. Not so much action, but lots of interesting, quite strange characters which do considerable thinking and talking without being boring. I will buy the second book as well. :-)

This book, though not without flaws, was awesome. This novel has been labeled as "feel-good science fiction" and I completely agree! I need more books like this one. A heads up though: this book is more character driven than plot or action driven. I don't mind that but it is not everybody's cup of tea. So be warned. So, what mustn't a character driven book lack? Of course, great characters! I never got bored because I found the characters to be so well written and developed. We have multiple POVs, so we get to know everybody on board the Wayfarer. I had to get used to that because I initially thought that we'd stick more closely to Rosemary, it sounded like that when reading the description, but I quickly adapted to the multiple POVs. I adored Sissix and Kizzy, they were my favorites. They are each in their own way warm and bubbly characters. I never quite connected with the others, though, which is very sad. There are all these interesting alien species and alien cultures we read about, the worldbuilding was wonderfully done. The cast and characters were also effortlessly diverse, without preaching or rubbing it into our noses. It just felt natural to have many different genders and races and it being NORMAL. God, I loved that! The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet was compared to the TV-series Firefly and I agree, I can see the similarities: space opera, awesome characters, aliens, alien culture, different planets, focus on characters. But Firefly had more action and overall plot (and a Western theme). (Side note: I love Firefly. One of the best TV shows if you ask me.) What bothered me was that interesting scenes were skipped. For example, a chapter ends with some revelation and a character has to tell the others and in the next chapter there's a time jump and that's it, maybe one or two sentences explaining what happened but we don't get to know and see more. Also, fyi: this book and the second one can be read as standalones. Another side note: that cover is sooooo beautiful!
