Takako once looked down upon Satoru's life. Now, she reluctantly accepts his offer of the tiny room above the bookshop rent-free in exchange for helping out at the store. The move is temporary, until she can get back on her feet. But on her healing journey in the months that follow, Takako surprises herself when she develops a passion for Japanese literature, becomes a regular at a local coffee shop where she makes new friends, and eventually meets a young editor from a nearby publishing house who's going through his own messy breakup.
But just as she begins to find joy again, Hideaki reappears, forcing Takako to rely once again on her uncle, whose own life has begun to unravel. Together, this unlikely found family of seeming opposites work to understand each other and themselves as they continue to share the wisdom they've gained in the bookshop.

A break between books
Satoshi Yagisawa tells of Takako, a young woman who suddenly encounters a deep emptiness. Gradually she finds her way back to life and discovers new vitality. His writing style is calm, patient, and unhurried, yet it carries a lot of power and depth. And I don’t mean the calm, patient, and unhurried part in a negative way at all. It’s simply something to feel-good about and also to reflect on. I’m not sure how else to describe it. I could add that it’s poetic and fluid. I simply love books in which books, bookstores, libraries, and reading play a central role. This always creates an instant sense of a haven of well-being for me. And the cover of the book is an invitation for all book lovers. When I see the book, I immediately feel comfortable and reassured, as if my worries have disappeared. This quiet story is ideal when you need a small break from a busy everyday life. It’s also well suited to help someone out of a reading slump (speaking from experience). I simply love it and can truly recommend everyone to read it. -

Cozy and inspiring book about the healing power of books and the comfort you can find in reading and spending some time away from your real life. Takako does not only find her love for reading and bookstores while helping out at the Morisaki Bookshop, she also connects with her uncle for the first time and finds the strength to start anew. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would and will definitely read more books like this! -

Short, sweet and comfy but laced with emotions
To say this book surprised me would be a heavy understatement. You might not think a book so short and seemingly cozy could make you feel so many emotions. But it did. A wonderful tale of a young girl lost in life, finding not only comfort but contentment in the pages of old books as she crawls her way back to happiness and learns the stories of her family. I cannot possibly tell you if I like this book so much beacuse of the amount of books mentioned in it or if it is the way it managed to echo deep within me. You don't know what anyone has gone through and sometimes you might not understand what you're going through either. Maybe sometimes all you need to do is read a book and dive into a fictional life of a stranger to find yourself again between the lines. -
