A Fave

Bewertung am 20.04.2026

Bewertungsnummer: 3115005

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

I stumbled upon this book by accident and fell in love. The heart pounding way this book makes you want to fight for every woman around is insane. It's terrifying in ways I can't imagine a man knowing. Props to this male writer for capturing something so vulnerable about the AFAB experience.

Feminist horror story

Thala am 15.02.2025

Bewertungsnummer: 2413677

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

If there was not a male name as the author on the book cover, I could have believed this story was written by a woman. There are mainly female, bold characters in this feminist story, guys and the world itself are the bad ones here. It's a story about witchcraft, and friendship and coming-of-age. The girls explore witchcraft as a medium to fight for their own rights. As underage youth, the home will not let them any rights over their body or the future of their babies. Abortion will not be discussed. Instead, the young girls serve as a baby factory for childless couples who are eager to adopt a baby. There are explicit scenes about childbirth. If you have not experienced childbirth, you might be traumatized after it. I would not recommend this book for pregnant women who are pregnant for the first time. Some scenes might be disturbing. Ferns development throughout the story is very impressive. At first, she only wants to get good grades and wants to get home. Then she stands up for herself. I liked her a lot. Each of the girls have to carry her own package, but together, they are stronger. The ending is really epic. A great horror book, brilliantly written.

the horrors of society

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

This book is a fierce and unflinching coming-of-age story rooted in the bonds of friendship and sisterhood. Set in a pre-Roe world, it explores the very real horrors faced by girls at a time when a pregnancy out of wedlock entailed social ruin and female autonomy was just a distant dream. The girls at the heart of this story may be flawed and impulsive, but their desperation is deeply human, and their fight for agency is both furious and necessary. Witchcraft becomes their powerful tool to reclaim control in a world that denies them even the most basic self-determination. It is an empowering story about young women who find power in each other and are willing to do literally anything to keep it.

Reinvented feminist horror

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

After finding a book for Witchcraft during one summer in the seventies, fifteen year old Fern is faced with a choice: either comply to the strict rules of the house for Wayward Girls, obey the adults around her and hopefully return home soon, or to take matters into her own hand and make everyone who wronged her and her friends pay. Desperate to help her roomate, Fern gives in to Witchcfraft. But she soon realizes; the only one who they can really trust is themselves. Empowering, touching and incredibly addictive; Grady Hendrix´s vivid imagery leaves you on the edge of your seat. An unexpected chillingly beautiful ode to femininity and it's true power.
