For someone I thought was my savior, you sure make me do a whole lot of labour!
I love feminist horror. But it´s a very complex genre and some works tend to wildly dangle around popular or controversial topics like they´re shiny keys to a toddler, without actually adressing the systematic issues behind them. Not this time. Hendrix writing is just deeply empathic and makes you smile, weep and rage. The characters,especially the antagonists feel like actual people, with motivations and reasons, instead of 2d mustache twirling villians. But a word of warning it does get very graphic in an almost body-horror-esque way. Definitely one of my favoirites of the genre and a highlight of the year! -

bewitchingly good
Grady Hendrix CRAFTED again and it's WAAAAY better then I expected! Okay, I did expect it to be amazing, I just knew by looking at the cover. First of all, this book does not just scare you with, well, obviously witches. There is a lot of gore. And graphic body horror. The book is set in the 1970s, depicting unwed teen mothers, being shipped off by their own families into ''homes'', to wait out their pregnancies. This is as infuriating as it is disturbing. The girls are being stripped off their rights and of course they are being treated as criminals by disgusting and creepy doctors. The real horror lies in the treatment of these women and beneath these witchy vibes, Hendrix centres the trauma and the injustice really well. You just have to read this, if you love powerful stories and powerful women! I, happen to love both. And I love this book. -

Giving girls power through witchcraft
This book starts off as a story of a girl who is shipped off to a maternity house to have her baby and then return home with a clean slate. However, anyone who has known anyone who has had a baby knows that giving birth isn’t something that you just do and then forget about. When the girls receive a book about witchcraft from a librarian, they discover something they have never had before - power. While I didn’t find this book particularly scary, it definitely had a few intense moments and gruesome descriptions. The use of witchcraft really underlines the helplessness that many girls must have actually felt when they were forced into maternity homes. Overall this book was a very interesting read and I particularly liked the end which wrapped up the whole plot nicely.
