Simon is the chosen one. The one who gets to save the world in the end. The problem? He is notoriously bad at it. This book made me smile more than just once. It´s loud, sarcastic and gets really gripping towards the end. I loved the characters. Yes, they may remind some readers of other well-loved characters of a different wizarding world but they are lovable and thought-through characters of their own. What looks like a fanfiction at first turns out to be a very intriguing story about magic and it´s limits as well as power, trusting one another and to love even through war and hardship. I recommend this book to everyone who loves fantasy and magic (Harry Potter or not) and who wants to throw themselves into a story full of surprises, plottwists and wholesome characters. Welcome to Watford School of Magicks, where magic lives and dies.

I just finished my latest re-read of Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, and I’m still blown away by it, just like I was five years ago when I first read it. Simon Snow is the Chosen One, and before I explain more, yes, the beginning of the book feels like a quirky AU of Harry Potter for the Queers, but once the introductory chapters are over, the (arguably better) world-building has your full attention. Simon is prophesied to end the creature called the ‘Humdrum,’ who people believe is responsible for the spots of magic-lacking places that randomly appear and absorb all magic used inside of them. The book is set in his final year at Watford School, and while he’s trying to figure out the prophecy and deal with his confusing teen angst, his rivalry with Baz, his vampire roommate, occupies more of his thoughts than they should. If you love: The Chosen One trope, enemies to lovers, magic, and possibly the world ending, you’ll eat this one up.
