The Crescent and Iron Cross is a historical fiction novel written by E. F. Benson. The story is set during World War I and follows the lives of two families, one German and one British, who are connected by a marriage between their children. The novel explores the complex relationships between the two families as they struggle to come to terms with the war and its impact on their lives. The book begins with the wedding of the German son, Count von Rudloff, and the British daughter, Lady Mary Hampton. The two families are initially thrilled about the union, but as the war breaks out, tensions rise between them. The von Rudloff family is torn between their loyalty to Germany and their love for their daughter-in-law and her family. Meanwhile, the Hampton family is struggling to come to terms with the fact that they are now at war with their son-in-law's country. As the war progresses, the two families are forced to confront their differences and the devastating impact of the conflict on their lives. The novel offers a powerful exploration of the human cost of war and the complex relationships that can be forged in times of crisis.Overall, The Crescent and Iron Cross is a gripping and thought-provoking novel that offers a unique perspective on World War I. Benson's vivid descriptions and well-drawn characters make for a compelling read that is sure to stay with readers long after they have turned the final page. But from about the beginning of the reign of the present German Emperor, German or rather Prussian diplomacy had been going quietly about its work. It was worth while to study the psychology of the Turks, because dimly then, but with ever-increasing distinctness, Germany foresaw that Turkey might be a counter of immense importance in the great conflict which was assuredly drawing nearer, though as yet its existence was but foreshadowed by the most distant reflections of summer lightning on a serene horizon. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
