Father Sergius is a novel written by the renowned Russian author Leo Tolstoy. The story revolves around the life of a young nobleman named Prince Stepan Kasatsky, who renounces his worldly life and becomes a monk named Father Sergius. The novel is set in the late 19th century and explores the themes of redemption, faith, and the struggle between worldly desires and spiritual aspirations. As a young man, Prince Stepan Kasatsky is a reckless and impulsive individual who indulges in various vices, including gambling and womanizing. However, after a scandalous affair with a married woman, he realizes the emptiness of his life and decides to seek redemption by joining a monastery.Father Sergius becomes renowned for his piety and asceticism, but he soon realizes that his spiritual journey is not free from temptation and challenges. He struggles with his desire for a beautiful young woman who seeks his help, and he is forced to confront his own weaknesses and limitations. The novel is a profound exploration of the human condition and the search for meaning and purpose in life. Tolstoy's masterful prose and vivid characterization make Father Sergius a timeless classic that continues to resonate with readers today. For some weeks Father Sergius had been living with one persistent thought: whether he was right in accepting the position in which he had not so much placed himself as been placed by the Archimandrite and the Abbot. That position had begun after the recovery of the fourteen-year-old boy. From that time, with each month, week, and day that passed, Sergius felt his own inner life wasting away and being replaced by external life. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
